The free version of SyncBack has worked for me for many years.

What type of backups? File Sync or Image?

For syncing my files (HDD) i use Goodsync

For imaging my OS (SSD) i use Paragon Drive Copy 11

Sorry, I should've clarified - I'm looking for file sync. My current backup solution involves imaging, but I find that I'm too lazy/forgetful to do it as often as I should. As a result, when I need to restore an image the data is usually a month or more out of date.

I figure it'd be better for me if I have frequent file syncs so that I don't lose any data, along with less frequent imaging.

Well as you can see here, everyone has a different favorite. Pick one and try it.

My favorite file backup is FreeFileSync (free) it's fast and very easy to set up and use. You can also schedule automatic syncs but I have never used this feature, I'm a hands on (manual) type person ;)
When you run the installer you will be given an option to install normally or install the portable version to a folder you have created on your external harddrive or flashdrive (this is my preference)
Edit: I always use the Mirror option because I never edit files on the external drive. So when I sync I know I want the files on the external drive to be changed to exactly the same as the files on the computer (or vice versa after a Paragon image restore)

For backup images I use Paragon Backup Free
I have a Netbook (no CD slot) and Paragon can easily create a Rescue Flashdrive (instead of Rescue CD) which works perfectly

    Example:
If I run into trouble and had to restore an earlier image with Paragon I then launch FreeFileSync, select the sync task name, then simply click the direction arrow to sync (update) from external harddrive or flashdrive to the computer.
Done  Now, where was I before I was so rudely interrupted :p

All the best, woz of oz
