I want to back up my hard drive so I am trying to find the best freeware for backups..after looking in the sticky on this forum I think DriveImage XML is the way I will go. My question is, how exactly does a back up image work? I want my external hard drive to be an exact replica of the hard drive in my computer. Also if anyone has another suggestion other than DriveImage XML, I will gladly listen.

Other ways is to just copy and paste whatever you value the most on your current computer onto the external HDD. You don't really need a backup-program to save your important files, if you're not after the option of saving the whole operating system without the need of reinstalling it and just copy it back.

yeah thats what I want to do--save the whole OS, an exact replica so that in the case of an HDD failure I can just get a new HDD and have everything ready to put on it.

Using windows Vista ? Vista has an automatic backup utility that works pretty well if you have an external disk. Just type "sdclt.exe" in the search field in the start menu, and it will prompt this utility automatically.

Thanks guys, I didn't realize that Vista had this "sdclt.exe" thing and that's what I am using now.
