BSoD: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

I've had some great help and advice on this forum, so I'm going to see if anyone can help with one of my current laptops.

I have a 5 year old Sony Vaio. It worked fine up until I moved home at the start of November and since then it started freezing up, then frequently going to bluescreen with the driver error: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

Initially, it seemed to happen only when I was using Firefox and took ages restarting. I downloaded and ran MiniToolBox. There were a bunch of errors related to Firefox and another bunch related to my cdrom. The cdrom doesn't work but there was a cd in it still, so I took that out and that error disappeared. I also uninstalled Firefox and that error disappeared - but they were replaced by new errors and the BSoD continued.

It's been a decent laptop and is useful to have around. So if possible, it would be good to repair it and get another year out of it.

me didnt understand any of those readouts.

them temps are high and i guess you wasnt doing anything but brousing. they are the sort of temps you would get after a session of high end gaming.
91c on the gpu could be shutting it down to protect the hardware. when was the last time you cleaned the vents and fans out with compressed air.

download who crashed from my sig below and run and then copy/paste the results. this will show the bsod results which are easier to read for the majority of people on here.

 

Thanks for the reply. The temps have always seemed high, it's not a recent thing, but the freezes and blue screens are new. But just in case, I will do a clean up - maybe moving home caused some dust or something.

In case your computer does experience sudden reboots it is likely these are caused by malfunctioning hardware, power failure or a thermal issue. ^^^^^^ This is very bad reading in my opinion, especially for the fact that your machine sports one of known-defective nVidia chips. It should not be getting that hot unless you're gaming or running a benchmark.

I'm not saying that the GPU is causing the BSOD and/or failing, but that particular temperature reading would have me concerned if the laptop were mine.

Have you ran memtest 86 on the RAM yet?

You may want to look into Notebook Hardware Control in order to lower your temps a bit. I know I would.

You are right there.

In fact, it's been an extremely reliable machine and hasn't required any such drastic action. Hence, despite planning to buy a Precision M6800 or Elitebook in the next month, I hope to keep this one running for a while yet. If it's running!

As for the program list - admittedly, I don't do much heavy photoshop, video or illustration work on this one. But it can run them all and reasonably well, too.

As for reinstalling Windows - may I ask what sort of reinstall you mean? A total reinstall where I have to back up all files and programs or a windows only reinstall which doesn't affect files and programs (I can't remember the names of the reinstalls). And would such a reinstall also affect the native Vaio software?

Admittedly, I don't much use the Vaio stuff, but I assume it does something...

A small problem: I don't have the original windows disks or Vaio disks for this install. It's authentic, in both regards (as I bought this laptop new), I simply lost them one or two home moves ago.

As for the graphics card and CPU: genuinely, they've always seemed high (80+). Initially, I was concerned but over the 5 years of its use there has never been a problem. So I kind of ignored it, finally. Should I worry, or is there something to do about it? The logs were done when only windows and a browser were running.

Additionally, I will do a clean later today. That is good sense regardless of the issues.

looking at your specs, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get another few years out of this machine with proper maintenance. i think you'd be pleasantly surprised at the "snappiness" you could bring back with a clean OS reinstall.

i simply meant that the sheer number of programs installed makes it surprising that you're not wanting to throw this machine out the window every time it boots out of frustration. about how long does it take for everything to become usable/initialize when you cold boot? it must be close to a minute if not longer. in that same vein, there must be an ungodly number of processes/programs running at any one time. for reference, and on a similar machine (the dell in my sig), i like to keep processes limited to <45 while using it.

i do mean a total, or clean reinstall of windows, i.e. formatting/erasing the entire drive and reinstalling a clean copy of windows. that would mean you need to copy any files you intend to keep to an external hard drive or a USB pen drive or discs, etc.

i can confidently assure you that none of the VAIO software/utilities are necessary or recommended even, to be running optimally. all those programs/utilities are what you'll oftentimes hear people refer to as bloatware. as i'm scrolling through that list, i see at least 30 programs that i'd uninstall and/or never install in the first place on my own machine.

there are many writeups available online to guide you through a windows installation. you'd basically prepare a DVD or a USB drive to boot from and install a new copy of windows from it. it's not a problem that you don't have the original windows disc. you can download a (legal) copy online and use your key to activate windows once installed. if your product key isn't physically printed somewhere on the machine or written down somewhere, you'll probably want to use a utility like belarc to obtain it beforehand.

you'll also need to be prepared to reinstall any hardware drivers and software you use regularly.

i think you're commenting on ajkula66's reply, in which case he was simply referring to the fact that your GPU, the nvidia 8400M GS, has been known to run very hot--to the point of causing major system issues and/or damage. there may have even been an acknowledgment by nvidia at some point and/or refunds and/or class action litigation. not quite sure. google it if you're interested. safe to say that if you've made it this long with that chip like i have however, you're either unaffected or there's not too many cost-effective options available to you now anyway.

 

I'd uninstall everything that you can reinstall with newer versions. If no recovery and no windows dvd exists, then definitely don't wipe the drive of the OS; even if you had either - need to have the drivers too.

Create a system image before starting. After uninstalling unneeded programs - run ccleaner registry cleaner.

I don't know that it is easier ; I'd prefer myself to restore the drive to zero's and then reimage, if at all possible. Sure would hate to spend any amount of time on something only to have the problem persist.

 

According to my Wise Care 365, my start up takes, on average, between 70-80 seconds; which I don't mind. In fact, in the 5 years I've had this machine I've rarely switched it off. When I say rarely, I mean I tend to leave it running overnight. As for processes, I don't know how comprehensive the task manager is, but I've just counted them and there are 30 - I have slimmed it down over time. So things may not be as bad as you imagine, or else I've just conditioned my expectations a little lower than you.

Yes, you're probably right about the Vaio stuff. Since opening this thread I've thought about it again and cannot honestly say I've used any of it. I have a few external drives so I don't tend to worry too much about space.

As for a total wipe and reinstall. I'm warming to the idea - but is there any way of doing a complete back up of all installed programs and their files which would allow me to reinstall most of them again without having to go back to their various installers? As I write that I am fairly sure I'm asking for magic beans, but it's worth asking.

I've found a Windows utility/tool called Backup and Restore Center - would that do anything useful for my task?

Thanks everyone for your input here. Especially Mattcheau. I can see other advantages to doing a complete reinstall, such as reclaiming space from Vaio. And with such a workhorse as this laptop has turned out to be, it would be good to get it's full usefulness out.

Unless someone has a good answer to the magic beans question, I guess the next task is to start a complete audit of my software and ensure I have installers and registration info somewhere for them all.

 

if youve lost the original disc then look through the windows os and software thread and look for digital river download post where you can download os again.
also download magic jelly key finder which will find you windows licence key on your machine.

 

You should check to make sure there isn't a bitcoin miner running that was installed with malware.

Check for weird folders on your C: drive.
Download GPUShark and look at GPU load is it maxed?

If not I would second the suggestion of running a memtest and/or reinstalling windows.

 

UPDATE:

So, I reinstalled Windows. I even ran DBaN first, just for good measure. I had a few difficulties (created another thread about them) but I finally got back to square 1. Then, as I was installing some basic programs (7-zip, Firefox, Avast...) I got a BSoD: driver_irql_not_less_or_equal again!

So I reinstalled WhoCrashed and ran it - the results are below.

Apparently, it's the driver for my USB stick! And this kind of makes sense. I said the issues started after I moved home - at my old home, I didn't use wireless, I plugged directly into the router. So it was only when I moved home that I started using that device again (although I've used it many times before). And in my initial post, I said I thought the issue was Firefox. I guess it makes sense because the blue screens always seemed to coincide with internet use.

Unfortunately, the native Sony wireless/bluetooth stopped working a year ago - so I have to use a peripheral of some kind.

The device I'm using is a:
Philips SNU5600 Wirelss USB Adapter 11b/g

I've checked out the available drivers and looked for updates, but the driver I have installed is the most up to date! (Although that is dated 2008)

Any suggestions?

These things if, after reimage, you've tried the native Sony Wifi network module and driver and it is faulty still, but before you installed the Phillips network USB.

Uninstall all Wireless network drivers and software. Watch for BSOD.

If Sony is still reporting in the device manager network module afterwards: Disable it.

Or if you can get to the module: remove it from the machine if it is faulty.

When you first installed Windows did it automatically have a generic driver for the device or did it make you install the drivers? It looks like the original drivers are not actually supposed to be used with the OS but their own proprietary software. maqy be time for a new and proper device or replace the internal card...........

Edit; please in the future don't post all that info you did on the first page without explaining the system is crippled and you are using an alternate method of doing something, like a USB network card. this would have saved a lot of figuring this out.............

 

Yes, I went with that.

I got a Belkin Play N600 Dual Band WiFi USB Adapter. I installed yesterday and it's been running fine, with no blue screens and decent connection continuously.

When I reinstalled, it requested that I install drivers; which I did, and the problem recurred. I've now got a new device and that seems to be working out ok, thanks.

As for leaving out the information about using a USB device, instead of the native device. All I can say is that if I had thought about that I may not have needed to post here in the first place. Unfortunately, being a 'low-tech user' is more often the problem! But I take your point.

And, of course, the other result of my 'oversight; is that I ended up wiping and reinstalling Windows, taking a full weekend, eventually, when all I actually had to do was get a new network adapter for £30!

In any case, thanks, again, for everyone's help and advice here.

 

glad to hear you got everything sorted. is it running noticeably faster? and out of curiosity, did you have to backup your files before you reinstalled windows or did it save them?
