    Hi there

I'm having a problem getting XP running smoothly on my new Asus M70VM.

When I put some DVDs in the drive and the autoplay starts to read the disk I get a BSOD with the following error code -

    c000021a

    0xc0000005 (0x7c9106c3 0x00c7ed04)

This doesn't happen with all DVDs though. I can put in my C & C 3 DVD, my Oblivion DVD, my Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts DVD with no problems.

But when I put in the Asus Drivers DVD and my Medal of Honor Airborne DVD it happens.

Please could someone advise me on whats wrong here, I'm suspecting it's a driver issue as the drive works fine in Vista.

The drive is shown as an Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S in the device manager in Vista and it's using the basic Microsoft driver in both XP and Vista.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice on this. :)

i doubt it is a driver issue..... unless you have an HD DVD or BluRay... other than those 2 situations 99% of all cd/dvd drives don't require any driver other than the standard MS driver (in XP it is version 5.1.2535.0)

if the problem disks have worked in the past, then my first step would be to clean the ODD's lens... after that, i would check all the settings for the drive especially the UDMA settings

here is some info on your error...

Ok well I'll check out the link, but just in case anyone can offer some other advice it's a brand new drive and it is a blu ray drive.

Also how do I check the UDMA settings?

My first guess would be the problem stated under "0xC0000005 - Resolution Suggestion Two:" in the link BigO gave. Certain disks want to get crazy acceess to your computer before they will even run. It might be conflicting with the DEP. Try the fixes mentioned at that point in BigO's link and see if it helps.

In regards to the UDMA, you can read up on how to change the settings here:

Aha! Ok thanks for that. Turns out downloading XP SP3 solved the issue, thanks for the tips though.

I think next time I'll leave it a day or so before I post asking for advice, just lately I seem to have solved most problems myself... Thanks again though. :)

Glad to hear man :). I'd imagine the problem was fixed by either the changes in DEP or XML in SP3.
