BREAKING NEWS: Another OEM to offer XP. $10 addition.

Word has it that another OEM has plans to, within the next 3 days, offer an installation of Windows XP for $10 added on the price of their basic systems. This is interpreted as a response by the company in question to offset potential shifting of the user base to Apple due to their new Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system set to debut tomorrow. The obvious question is, with more companies losing any faith in the survivability and longevity of Windows Vista, can there be any redemption for the operating system?

EDIT: I am not bashing Vista. I am not pro-Apple. I am simply relating what I heard from a reliable source. Don't attack me. Don't threaten my family over private message. Thank you.

    Vista is good.

They just need to stop using devices with crappy driver support & stop making crap in the installation with bloatwares...

Vista sucks. Leopard's going to help Apple get an unprecedented 8% of the market share, and we all know that 8's much closer to 51 than 7 is. Further proof that Mac OS is better than Windows OS.

Edit: bah, got the numbers wrong. 16 percent increase in market share, not 16 percent market share.

Edit Edit: /sarcasm for the ones with faulty detectors.

Well if you provide valid reasons why vista sucks, and you've used it for a while then you can bash it. Otherwise, i think not.

Hmmm... are you being sarcastic or do you really think so?

Personally I won't get involved in the argument. I think both operating systems are great. I've been using Vista for a while now and it's very reliable. Also, I like the simplicity and reliability of OSX.

You can get links or sources to support any random idea in the world. Just because something is sourced doesn't make it any more valid. People will choose what OS they're going to use, and that's pretty much end of story.

I just dont like OS X because of compatability issues with most programs. A friend of mine has one and when i look at it, it looks crazy, but i havent had much expreience with it, so i cant rate anything else, just a hassle and pain, aggravation to find a "mac compatable" version of a game or program, which usually comes out at a later time also. Mac's Quality in technology and design is pretty good though. i've heard support is a little on the bad side though. never used Apple support though. Just Rumors, etc.

A: Probably HP or some like brand.
B: For all of you that tried to say I was bashing Vista, STFU. I'm simply reporting a story I got second hand and thought I'd do the courtesy of handing to you folks. If you want to be overly defensive regarding Vista, I don't even need to say anything about it to reinforce the fact it has 'issues'.

And anyway, why is everyone "Vista Bashing" (never heard that, very funny)?? After you install the available updates... Its perfectly fine, and SP1 will be comming soon. What do you think XP was like when it came out??? Same thing, just on a lower level. Vista is perfectly fine, its just that the requerments for it, compared to what it does for you, are rediculous (Vista needs 2X the RAM of XP)--but... (XP needed 2X the RAM of 98/ME/2000) Same thing, just that both OS upgrades dont really give you that much, most of it is just graphics and stupid little add-onns (Like the Vista "rating" of your PC) We could all live without that..LOL

EDIT: not saying that you were Vista bashing,Grimhound, just making a gereral statement.

yeah XP needs even more than 2x the ram.

I remember when XP was launched. It started at 128mb minimum, 256 recommanded (was running fine on my 128mb/Voodoo3/P3 733) but since SP2 it's more like 512min and 1GB recommanded (if you think you can do someting with 256MB....)

Most people in the Mac community are looking forward to Leopard. If anything, Apple's good at advertising what's "hip and cool". Thus this won't be an issue for most.

The most common response to this is that Mac's aren't overpriced if you compare them to similarly spec-ed Windows machines. This argument flies over my head as well.

No, not at all. But you have to have someone defending Apple, it's only fair. Also I like the use of /sarcasm tags.

Boot Camp has always been a Leopard only feature...it was only out as a Beta for Tiger because Tiger was the latest OS then. Its like saying Vista Aero should be in Windows XP. It isn't, and that's because it is a feature of Vista.

And actually, Boot Camp Beta has expired, but only the utility has expired, your Windows partition is not affected. So you can still use Windows fine on a Tiger Mac, but you won't get any more updates nor can you change the partition sizes, as the Boot Camp utility for Tiger is expired.

Seeing things here I would say that Vista is the one that needs defending. ;)

Yes... Macs aren't overpriced. They're just bundled with more high end stuff that most consumers aren't aware of (LED screen for example).

If you use Boot Camp Beta after tomorrow, you are violating the license. Whether Apple will have technical measures to enforce their license (beyond not providing updates), I don't know.

I've had no issues with Vista. It's been pleasantly reliable, which has surprised me. Of course, my G1s came with Vista preloaded, so it worked out of the box, and my computer has vastly superior hardware compared to my old hp zt3000.

Yeah, plus it's silver, light-weight, and sleek. Some might consider it a "hot"-looking computer. Additionally, it comes with that magnetic charge plug, and that one cool program, and no bloatware either. Oh, don't forget the slot loading drive. And not having to pay for those free antivirus/antispyware programs that you Windows users buy.

Well, the 15 inch model has better value. I guess the 17 inch model is overpriced.

Personally I don't like Macbook Pro. I think it's too "plain" looking. However if you consider everything that the 15 in model offers you'll see that it's a good deal.

In my opinion I think Vista has finally catched up to OSX in terms of interface.

I used to prefer OSX to XP but now I prefer Vista to OSX. Don't at least agree that Aero is pretty cool and the new icons in Vista are much more modern?

Anyway, back to the original topic...
I'd definitely like to see XP offered again, at least until Vista SP1 comes out a users have a chance to evaluate Vista again. SP1 is probably Vista's last chance to really do well before the tech world gives up on it.

Note how I started the first post in this thread with: 'Word has it' I never said 'My sources have it', or presented it in such a way to give it the definite association with fact. I am skeptical of Vista, and from what I've heard, it is suffering. Most people think Vista is the only operating system they can run on their computer from a quick informal survey I took around my campus, so if numbers betray my statement, it doesn't necessarily mean the statement is wrong.

However, I do fully understand why some people would think I was mindlessly bashing Vista. Take note of this: I have never owned anything other than a MS Box. DOS, Win95, Win98, Win98:SE, Win:ME, Win2k, and WinXP have all passed through my normal usage. It's all I've ever really known. I'm on a Windows box right now. Yet I do not place loyalties to an operating system. I try to remain neutral, as the fact is that software is just software.

Somebody earlier (Calvin?) asked Lithus why he didn't like Vista, or if he had any reasons to dislike it at all. I'll provide my own reasons.

    - When I exchanged my laptop (faulty Toshiba for $500 store credit), I tried to negotiate for an XP MCE license, but store was powerless to even make it possible.

    - None of my games installed properly or achieved acceptable performance (>25fps); these include titles that some would consider old such as Empire Earth 2, Age of Empires 3 (MS game!), Counterstrike Source, Half-life 2, Half-life 2: Episode One, and Sniper Elite.

    - Two of my critical work programs (AutoCAD and NI Labview 8.0) didn't work; they bombed completely.

    - Start up and hibernate times were longer than XP's even after turning off services, removing startup programs, defragging, system maintainence, etc.

    - Add/Remove program functionality was unreliable and unresponsive at times (ie the GUI would provide me with no feedback on the status of the task).

    - Icons and options seemed to be moved around for no purpose whatsoever; some design choices made in the name of efficiency made absolutely no sense (for example, 3 methods to shut down the computer from the Start menu alone).

    - Aero as well as Flip3D (which I laughed out loud at, being experienced with Beryl) quickly lost their purpose to me. This may be a matter of personal preference.

Those are pretty good reasons for ditching Vista, I think. I also had previous experience with this OS when it came to fixing other people's computer problems. MS developers didn't seem to have clear goals in mind when they designed the OS, and in my opinion there is something really retarded with that OS :p. Give me Ubuntu or XP any day.
