This Windows service BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service, shows up as svchost.exe (netsvcs)) has been sapping my internet dry lately by constantly downloading and using all my bandwidth. My ISP limits my DL to 375MB per day because it's satellite.

    I have 3 questions:

-How do I log what exactly it's downloading?
-How do I turn it OFF permanently?
-Why is it downloading without my consent?

    Thanks for ANY HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Go into Administrator -> Services, and you can disable it from there.

Do you have Windows Update set as automatic?

Roger, if I disable the service, it starts up again when I restart the computer or log off.

KLF, Windows Update is set to notify me but not download or install any updates.

I'd first like to know what it's downloading, then maybe that will help me find the root cause instead of just disabling the service.

How did you figure out that BITS is using all of your bandwidth?

Turn OFF Windows Update and see if that helps. Windows still checks for updates (BITS will use your internet) if you set WU to notify you.

I opened up resource manager and correlated the PID to the BITS service. I did some research as well and it seems I'm not the only one with this problem.

I will try turning the updates off completely.

Microsoft allows non-Microsoft software to use the BITS Api - Adobe, Google (for Chrome updates), Norton (for installer downloads) to name a few.

You can see what BITS is actually doing in the BITS-Client log in Event Viewer/Application Logs.
