Is there a script somewhere that deactivate indexing when I go on battery? I got one for aero, so I guess it's possible. Something that would deactivate the service then activate it again when the AC is back on

I'm sure it's possible, but I searched and didn't find anything. I hope you're not trying to gain battery life this way, because it won't really help. Indexing is only a little taxing on the system initially;once everything is indexed, it stays indexed.

It's still working and using 20% of the CPU, I guess that make's a difference

    Start Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)

Navigate to Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search

Set Prevent indexing when running on battery power to conserve energy to Enabled.

    --L.

You need to question why that is the case. As was said, once indexing is done the first time the ONLY time it kicks in again is when a new file is added, and old one is changed or one is deleted to the directories within the index's scope. That last bit is important. You do NOT want the entire drive to be in the index's scope. You only want your documents folder, your start menu and maybe a handful of other folders where YOU place things that you might want indexed.

If your indexing is running at a constant 20%, then it sounds like you have some directories that are in constant state of change being indexed.

I've re-indexed it and now it seems to be stable, not at 20%.

Good, it's always better to cure the disease than to hide the symptoms.

yes, getting into the group policy editor and searching for items relating to battery should be the first stop for folks looking for additional config items that might extend battery life.

On the other paw, mucking about with gpedit settings without having a solid understanding of the consequences is a sure way for a CNB to brick their machine.

    Be careful out there.

+rep to you. This was a power management option in vista and vanished for 7.

people like me who use long flights to clean up the 1000+ messages in outlook, rearrange files, etc...find indexing starts to torch battery life for hours when working like this. Thanks for the fix!
