Currently using a rental laptop before my new laptop arrives. It is using a Vista basic with only 512MB of RAM, and it runs god bloody slow. I can't really play around with it without getting frustrated. Control panel itself takes about a minute to load, then another minute for each other options. So if anyone can tell me how to make it go faster, please do. Thanks.

Edit: Ok, got classic view, but there wasn't much of a difference in speed. Any suggestion?

Sadly, Vista doesn't treat computers with only 512 MB of memory very well (in any iteration) You may be best just putting up the slow speed (if you'll have the computer a short period of time) Otherwise I'd say install XP or put more memory in. I know those aren't very attractive options, but it's all I can think of.

If you have a spare USB flash drive sitting around, you can put it in the computer and allocate some of it to use as cache, or "virtual memory." This is known as ReadyBoost. The option should come up as soon as you insert a flash drive with plenty of free space on it. I would recommend having at least a 1GB flash drive. ReadyBoost helps dramatically on system with only 512MB of RAM.

Forgot about ReadyBoost in Vista. Thanks for the suggestion :).
