Since Corel Paint Shop pro X just decided to stop working on my PC (been using it for a year and a half, no problems, then all of a sudden it starts telling me it's damaged or has been illegally modified, and no amount of reinstalling seems to help) I've been muddling around with free photo/painting programs. I decided to try GIMP since it does install under LINUX (and some day I want to move to a Linux based platform) and so far I like it, I use Picasa2 as my "album" software and that also seems pretty darn spiffy.

Anyone have comments on either? Things you disliked, or found wanting?

I use it at work (I'm a coldfusion web designer) and found it to be very easy to use. If you're looking for tutorials or information the GUG (Gimp User Group) is a very good source.

The only problem I've found is that when looking for tutorials and information on how to do something, there are about 10 photoshop tutorials to the one GIMP tutorial. The other side to this is that because GIMP is designed to be as easy to use as photoshop, in most circumstances you can just adapt the tutorial.

    How have you found it?

    I use the GIMP.
I found it pretty easy to use, and not too steep a learning curve.
Another alternative is Paint.NET, similar to MS Paint on steroids. pretty easy to use as well.

I do too, Love it. But it's not a replacement for photoshop. Very good in doing things that would take most apps longer to do. I mainly use it to manipulate photos.

I rather use other apps like Faststone, Kodak, MGI PhotoSuite ETC: ETC: to edit the color balance and all that stuff
