I'm replacing a hard drive with a solid state, and will probably sell the HDD. Is dban ok to use to wipe it clean? Will it affect the functioning of the drive at all, the computer?

No problem. DBAN (or alternative KillDisk) will work fine and won't affect your HDD.
Use one-pass zero for removing all data, that's all you need.

Yeah I use DBAN when i'm selling off an old system, it will take a while to clear on larger disks (had to leave the system on overnight) but I think it's worth it for that peace of mind.

I just want to make that extra clear. Also a Windows install disk has the same feature.

If you are super paranoid about your data, run the 7 pass wipe, minimum DoD standard for data security...or 35 pass if you are ultra paranoid..
