What features are you looking for exactly and do you mind if it is in the taskbar?

RMclock can show the CPU freq, load, temp in the taskbar. I believe NHC(old program) can show the same in the taskbar(and it has a battery icon).

MobileMeter(old program but standalone) can show
    [IMG]
(MobileMeter is on the left-ignore the rest of my desktop)

Another option besides Google desktop and Vista's Sidebar, is Rainmeter. With the right configuration/skin, it can look really good(see here for a good example)

There are piles of sidebar gadgets that work like that.

I like the simplicity of the Google app though. I guess I'll look for some gadgets. I hate the gadgets sidebar though (don't ask, just do).

well yah, sidebar, giggle, giggle, snicker. In Vista gadgets are MAJOR resource hogs because of the main sidebar process and then the secondary sidebar process that actually runs the apps. The gadgets themselves are fairly lightweight as MSFT intended. MSFT just fubar'd the support structure underneath gadgets in vista.

WIn7 changes this. The DWM now directly manages the gadgets (no fixed sidebar per se) and the sidebar process itself only has to service the individual gadgets. Much more efficient.
