I just built a HTPC. It has a 1.5TB drive in it. I'd like to take my DVD collection and place it on there by re-encoding them into into H264 format, but am at a loss as to how to do it. There's lots of guides on how to do this, but none written in an easy to understand way, at least for me. It's been so long since I've done any of this, I've forgotten it all. Anyone know of a good guide for doing this? Thanks for any help.

This is the guide I used to start encoding with the super-awesome X264. (I used VirtualDubMod BTW, but its pretty much the same) Or MeGUI, which has a Bitrate-Calculator as well. :p

It's highly over rated. It will never catch on. Long live Alta Vista.

Please note this message was brought to you by the department of sarcasm.

Thanks for the link, but how do I go from .vob to. avi? It says in the guide "open your video file by dragging the AVI to VirtualDub".

Well, .vob is based upon the MPEG-2 format, so it'll work with VDubMod.

I am not really into DVD-ripping and all, but it'll be the same as encoding the .avi in the guide. Just drop the .vob onto the VDubMod window.

You'll probably face issues if there are multiple IFOs and VOBs. In that case, you would have to play around with other tools such as VOBedit, VStrip, IFOedit, etc and combine everything into a proper, single VOB and then convert that to mkv, avi, etc.

Thanks for the heads up. With DVD Decrypter you can actually rip them as one giant VOB. I'll give that a whirl. Thanks again.
