So, I bought my Sager last year. It's been working great, awesome laptop. I have 64-Bit Vista installed, and I was just wondering if I could get Windows 7 for cheaper or do I have to buy it seperately for my laptop? Thanks.

As explained in the Windows 7 upgrade sticky, you can purchase a Windows 7 upgrade disc. You cannot get a free upgrade for your laptop.

You have to buy it separately. If you had purchased the laptop this July when MS announced the Windows 7 free upgrade offer it wouldn't have cost you anything. You can still buy W7 Premium Upgrade with 32 and 64 bit versions for $119.

You can attend one of the Windows 7 launch event and get it for free. It's in the deals section on this forum.

and maybe microsoft would update its ultimate steal program when win7 is released

right now, vista ultimate upgrade for students is 64.95 at ultimatesteal.com

so i'm guessing that win7 ultimate might also be available for the same price.

of course you need to be a student for such a thing :)

If you buy Vista Ultimate now maybe you can get a free upgrade to Win7. Should contact them and find out.

    A. Did you buy your Sager after June 26th, 2009? Then you should get it free.

    B. Do you go to school? Plenty of educational establishments offer discounts on software and OS. MSDN is a good example.

    C. Wait, the closer its gonna get to Win7's release to more offers your gonna see pop up. Microsoft WANTS to sell Windows 7 just so they can shove it into Apple's face after everything that happened with Vista (no offense to any Apple users).

    D. Befriend someone with a Technet/MSDN account, generally a good idea.

    E. You can pray really, really hard and up a copy falls out of the sky.

consider joining microsoft tech net, get unlimited use of microsoft licenses that do not expire, there is also a 25% off cupon for it. makes it like $260, but then you can get whatever software you want, and legitimate copys too. the only con is you have to download it.

Yeah. I evaluated Vista x64 for about 2.5 years and just finally decided that it wasn't for me. Now I'm evaluating Windows 7. Maybe this will be the one.

In all seriousness though, Technet licenses are not supposed to be used in "production" environments, whatever that actually means. For myself, I'd draw the line at (production) business/non-business use. That is, running Windows Server 2008 in your den for kicks...OK. Running it on your company's production web server...not OK.

I'd wager that 75% of Technet subscriptions are bought by guys who just like to fool around with lots of OS's or see it as a cheaper way to get copies of an OS on multiple machines. I'm sure MS knows this too. It's the best value in software.

As for the Technet evaluation only thing, the EULA for the software is still there meaning once you have the CD key its yours, the technet EULA just says you can't sell it since the keys are provided for your benefits in a testing environment. Hence, they give you the software to keep so you can play around with it, you just can't resell it. I have a bunch of PCs at home, and I do all the software and hardware for my friends, they get the latest and greatest OS out of it, I never have to pay for lunch...ever again. I am testing the software on as many machines as I can :p Back up all your keys you get from Technet so you have them if you don't plan to keep renewing your subscription. You get 10 activations (automatic) before you need to call in and manually activate.

PS If your are going to sign up for a technet, change your home address to a state with no sales tax, then after you pay change it back. I heard this is what people where doing. I paid about $20 in sales tax ($260 after 25% off and then about $280 after tax).

If you wait for W7 to be released , People that bought Vista notebooks and got a free W7 dvd will be selling them on Ebay, whether they will only work on the system that they come with is another question.

When I did the Vista upgrade last time around for one notebook, they send me 2 copies (2 keys for Vista Business Retail). Fully functional, had 'em on my desktop and another notebook until I got my 2 free copies of Ultimate. Had another copy of Home Premium that they gave me, that I gave to a friend. Another friend bought Vista Ultimate and they had a promo for a second free copy going on. They were rather generous with Vista, I would of bought Vista, but there never ended up being a reason to, hence I paid for a technet account for once. No idea what they are going to do this time around.
