I know how all the raid modes work and while never using raid before am pretty sure I could set it up without much trouble.

But one question I have never seen asked or answered is, is there a way to have a raid setup between 2 drives that have there own partitions?

I like to keep my OS & media seperate via a partition for obvious reasons, and my new computer is going to have two of the 640gb WD drives.

So to raid 1 or 0 the drives is it possible to split one drive into say 140/500 and raid the 500gb or so to the other drive but leave the 140 untouched?

I guess I am asking if you can raid only certian partitions or does it have to be the entire drive and thus create the partitions on the raid array as a whole instead, and that would mean i need to find a way to backup the 300gb of media I have so that I can wipe the drive.

i dont think it will be possible, because logically in RAID 1, one drive is the mirror image of the other....so if a partition is made in one drive the same partition would be made in the other....so i think the partitioning you are talking about might not be possible in RAID 1 since whole drives are required to build a RAID....but might be possible for RAID 0 because I did read on Symatec's site that Partition Magic supports RAID 0 and 5....so you could probably repartition the drives using PM and rebuild the RAID 0 on them..!! or maybe you could make partitions during the windows format....not very sure about this..!! repartitioning then rebuilding RAID 1 on the drives maybe possible....found this....

I don't believe this can be done. You must raid the 2 drives first, and then configure partitions. Are you thinking of using xp or vista? XP requires you to load the drivers from a floppy disk (which is very annoying), whilst vista allows the use of an optical drive. Another plus for Vista :)

Im going Vista, I am still in debate to use x64 or x86 tho....

I probably will go x64 and have to sacrifice the option to use ppjoy to use my wiimote on my pc games.

you probably know this already, but after reading some reviews of the wd6400aaks, you should use hdtune to check access times, and if the access time is higher than 13-14ms, you should disable AAM either using hdtune pro, or hitachi disk tools, which will give u an access time in the 12ms range.
