    I use these -

    HOSTS file (for both IE 8 and Opera), and urlfilter.ini (for Opera).

    admuncher works better than adblock and works for any application, any browser...etc. Admuncher can also block scripts, flash or anything you wanted and much much more.

    For IE8 specifically, you can take advantage of the built in adblocker (IN PRIVATE FILTERING). You can go on google and search for a compiled XML list of blocked ads list pulled striahgt from adblock.

    Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 does all sorts of add blocking for me - any browser I used so far (IE7, IE8, FF3, Opera 9.6x), MSN, ICQ - but it is a full anti virus/security suite.
