Is it possible to just use an activation key in windows RC rather than backing up all my data? I have a key for win 7 pro from my college website. Is there any way to use that? Thanks!

No, unfortunately I believe you have to do a clean install moving from Windows 7 RC to the retail versions.

I believe you have to reinstall. You can backup your data, or *might* be able to do an upgrade install, but if I were in your position, I would use Windows Easy Transfer and move all of my user data and system settings to a clean install. YMMV...

Actually, upon further investigation, I found that it is possible to upgrade from Windows 7 RC to the retail RTM version, however, Microsoft does not support this and discourages it, due to certain problems they had when testing it out. The process is described here, so you can upgrade if you choose to do so - but just to be safe, backup your data anyways.
