    Hi,
I was hoping anyone could help me in my search for an application I can use to either run a custom application or at least lock the laptop when the lid is shut. By lock I just mean send it to the windows logon screen with the user still logged in, rather than Standby because that takes a bit too long for my needs.

    If it's a hardware specific thing, I'm using a Dell Vostro 1500.

I've tried a search on the forum though unfortunately it's turned up fruitless.

    Thanks.

I pretty sure can set this on the power options.. maybe in the advanced power options.

    Are you using vista?

Ah sorry I'm using XP Home, for the actions on closing the lid it has:
    Do nothing
    Standby
    Hibernate

    No lock the computer.

    Thanks.

There really isn't any other option that will lock the laptop down, aside from Standby + 'Prompt for password when computer resumes from Standby'.

Maybe you can try enabling your screensaver and check that option for 'On resume, password protect'? Of course you should set the laptop to 'Do nothing' when you close the lid. So that when you close your laptop and it plays your screensaver, your computer is locked when you return to it.

I wanted to know the same thing, but I don't think it is possible, unless you put it on "Do Nothing."

After that you lock your computer and shut the lid.

I don't think there is a way to actually shut the lid and have it come back up as a locked screen. You can go on "Sleep," or "Standy By," but no "Lock."

I hate it when AIM signs out when I put my comp on "Sleep." Heh.

The Power Manager on Thinkpads comes with a feature that locks the computer on lid close. I'm sure that there are other apps that can do this as well.

Try setting Windows to "do nothing" and then setting a BIOS password. I think this will result in a prompting for a BIOS password when you reopen the lid, afterwhich you will go right into Windows (without having to resume from standby).

I'd test it now except that it requires a restart, and I don't currently have a BIOS password set. But the BIOS password is completely safe - more so than the Windows one. Vista locked me out after I set a Vista password :)mad:  ), hence I'll never trust it. And I don't feel like taking the chance with XP, either. But the BIOS one I've never had fail - it's even more imperative that BIOS passwords work than Windows ones. And if it does it'll be because of a dead CMOS battery, and thus a clearing of the password.

You can do it just with the standard Windows setup, no extra software. I have it set up this way.

In Power Options (advanced settings) set Lid Close Action to "Sleep".
Then under "Additional settings" (in the same box, at the top), set "Require a password on wakeup" to "Yes".

EDIT: ok, I see scythie mentioned that option already. Anyway, if you meant that you wanted to lock the computer without also going to sleep... then I don't know.

try setting the lid to take no action and using the "windows" + L combo to lock the computer.
