I was searching Western Digitals site for their diagnostic software and came upon this free download of Acronis software which works if you have a WD drive installed in your PC. Maybe this is old news to some but I wish I would have known about it before I purchased my Acronis software.

I just thought it might be useful to those with WD drives and are asking what software to use for backups, cloning, etc. Its FREE.

I just bought one today "WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB" from Fry's Electronics in preparation for my Windows 7 install. I think the prices are quite good now. I don't know where you reside though. FYI, I now have two of these drives, one is in a WD Passport Essentials external portable and both are quiet, smooth running (no vibration), just warm to the touch, and no clicking. I am a very pleased with them.

    Best Buy 89.99
    Newegg 89.99

I'm from the Philippines and prices here are just about Php4,800 (Roughly less than a hundred bucks) so I'd say the prices are right..but my budget isn't lol I'd have to sell three Maxtor external HDD's first lol.

I'm also kinda hoping my dad would get me one for free, since he's at Singapore and it might cost less there.

I do have a WD3200BEVT inside my notebook and I'm planning on grabbing a 500GB one, cloning my orig hdd and replacing it for the bigger HDD. And then just buy an enclosure for the 320gb one for my backups. :D

EDIT: How does the WD-only thing work with the Acronis? Do I only have to have an internal WD harddrive to install to, or does it have to be a WD drive that I will be cloning to as well?

Since I have Acronis Trueimage 2009 installed I have not installed this version so I cannot answer first hand.

    Edit:

Per the WD Manual for this product:
    * Acronis True Image WD Edition allows selecting only Western digital HDD as a restore location and for Cloning operation.
    * Acronis True Image WD Edition is available for installing and launching only when a Western Digital HDD is connected.

Or, if you have a Seagate drive instead of a WD, they also provide their own discwizard (which is in fact Acronis) for free.

Great find +1! I like Acronis, but now that I use WHS don't use it as much now. Either way great app for anyone to have. I have used WD for years, and still have my Raptor 150GB that is over three years old now (wow!) and going strong in my gaming desktop.
