i'm asking this cuz i'm (obviously) confused... i read from different threads recommending AVG as an anti virus, but the progam itself is named AVG anti spyware... so is it just another adaware/spywareS&D?

if it is, should i get avast! instead then? or is avast! the same case?

    TIA! :D

Grisoft (the company that owns AVG) has two different products with the AVG in the name. AVG Anti-Virus is a free program to take care of and protect you from viruses, and AVG Anti-Spyware takes care of adware/spyware.

I personally think Avast! is a better choice for a virus scanner. Both are free though, so it doesn't hurt to try one for a week and then try the other. See which one you like more. Ultimately that's what matters anyways.

Like ProntoR2 said, there's an AVG Anti-Virus program and an Anti-Spyware program. Different programs all together.

I use AVG as my anti virus and it works fine. I've never looked into Avast though.

The only reason I have lost faith in AVG is that I had a virus on my system that it couldn't find. I ended up purchasing Nod32 from ESET and it's the best on the market in my opinion. For free ones though I now resort to Avast!. Get it here.

i think AVG is pretty good for anti-virus. i wonder how you got the virus? openning the file someone send you thru IM, email? stop using IE is another way to prevent virus

I have no idea really. I'm thinking it propagated through my LAN from something one of my roommates downloaded. It wasn't through IM or Email because I don't even read IM's or email unless I know who they're from. As for IE, I've been using Firefox for years.

All good tips though abccba. It's a good idea for people to know them.

I agree. AVG was unable to remove 2 viruses I've had in the past 4 months.

I've had no problems with AVG.
I've only ever had a couple viruses and it dealt with them... unless I have viruses on my computer that it can't find! OH NO!

awesome thanks pee-poe for your replies :D

from reading your replies (and a few other threads comparing free AV programs) i think i'll go for avast!. it must be good cuz it's not just an ordinary AV program with an ordinary name like 'blah', but it's, u know, 'AVAST!'. reminds me of that episode of friends where joey's not just in 'freud' but 'FREUD!' :p ya sue me i'm a huge friends fan, but i've got nothing better to watch in hong kong
