    AHCI and ATA

    I just installed xp on a partition on my XPS1640...now xp wont load till i go into BIOS and change the HDD setting ATA....and to load to vista i need to change it back to AHCI...
    is there a way i can boot both OS with one setting...please help...

    You can set it to compatibility mode and Vista should boot, find and load the appropriate drivers. Or you can install the AHCI drivers for XP. Honestly there really is very little difference between the two performance wise, if your hard drive doesn't have those features built in.

    You need to install the AHCI drivers for XP - XP doesn't natively support AHCI. There are guides for installing those drivers after you've already installed XP, such as this one here; however, I cannot vouch for the correctness of the guide.

    It does on Dell laptops with SP2 as it's slip streamed on the disc. I install XP Home on my Dell laptops and it installs AHCI drivers automatically.

    Wow! One of the few times _Dell actually did something really helpful. I think the problem, though, is that _Dell doesn't support XP on the OP's system (could be wrong, I didn't go and ask Michael directly :D), in which case I doubt if they would provide the same for the OP.
