    I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate installed and I'm wondering if there's anyway to move to Home Premium without an entire format? Thanks!

    I know of no way to do it. I have Vista Home and Business for example and when I do an install of Business, MS does not offer me the option of installing to a lesser OS such as Home. I believe it will be the same way for WIN7. If you wish to dumb down WIN7 Ultimate, you can turn off the services that you do not want running in Ultimate. There are a few features that Home Premium has that Business does not, but Ultimate has all of them running. The core of the OS is the same for all versions so it is a difference in services among the versions is my understanding. What are you trying to gain or lose?

    It was possible to do a custom install without reformatting the partition.

    Just choose the custom Install option and Windows will move the old Windows directory aside and proceed as usual.

    Why do you want to lower your Win7 edition?
    But in any case, no you can't lower your edition re-install or not.

    If you want to transfer you WIn7 Ultimate to another computer and pass in Home Premium, you will need to do a clean install.

    After some serious digging, I found this. Be warned that I never tried it, and I have no idea if it is true or not. Do at you your own risk, but keep in mind that it's for a reason why Windows 7 doesn't support such move, also I don't know if this follows or not the License agreement.

    for a upgrade of what you have doesn't matter beta or not...

    to change versions of win7 up or down you can simply edit the registry and do a "upgrade"

    say you want to change from the beta OR retail ultimate to a student upgrade or retail premium...

    Create a registry file by opening notepad and saving it as a .reg file i call mine upgrade.reg this will contain (everything below except the < and >)the following:
    <
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
    "CurrentBuild"="7100"
    "EditionID"="Home Premiuml"
    "CurrentBuildNumber"="7100"
    >

    run this. reboot and now insert the Premium disk if you are using professional and run setup from WITHIN windows. Do an upgrade. when finished you will have premium and not ultimate. easy.

    works the same for any version just modify the reg file to include the version you want. so instead of premium you would enter professional etc..

    have done this many times now it works trust me

    The lack response from the OP, makes believe that he doesn't have a previous version on Windows on his system, and want to use his Win7 RC to his purchased Win7 Home Premium. This is against the License agreement.

    Thanks! Still waiting for my Home Premium upgrade disc but it looks like it should be easy enough to do with the registry tweak.
