I remember coming across this exact same article a while ago; but when I tried to find it for an explanation to another forum member I was unsuccessful. Thanks for sharing the link.

Ok article. I am a 64Bit lover and wouldn't go back. Found it a bit technically oriented which forced me to grab a large coffee and dump lotsa sugar in but verified some of the thoughts i have had (ie stability and X86 performance)

Thanks for doin up the post OP.

I still believe people tend to say x64 is bad by default and seeing people saying it's better to stick with x86 kinda pisses me off, because I have tried so many times to convince people to use what's best for their computer and to help driver developing at the same time.
I just hope these idiots know what they're getting into when they say: it's better to stick with x64; you should switch when it becomes mainstream and all the other crap. If no one's using it, no one will ever make drivers for it. That's a fact.
There was a guy in the Alienware forum asking for a BIOS that would fully support 4GB of RAM. Alienware basically said no one's using x64, so they wouldn't bother. That's BS, because users are paying for more than they are allowed to use.

Many many people are actually unaware that Core 2 Duo is a 64-bit processor.....

What? Is it ? Does that mean it was meant to support a X64 system? NO way.

planet_vikram that's not my problem neither is yours.
I believe that the large stickers saying: X64 compatible or whatever should really be read by people.
Microsoft is not to be blamed for the current driver issues. They are not stopping driver developers to code x64 drivers. Not at all. It's not Bill's fault that your webcam doesn't work or your laptop has some problems while running Vista x64. Blame the manufacturer, not the intermediary. If people would start taking action x64 is going to become what x86 is now.

:) Too bad these days I can't understand jokes.....

No but this actually happened to me......when I was about to buy a new notebook....I asked a friend who is actually a Computer Engineer and has Core 2 Duo about the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo.....He did some reading and told me they are just the same only some performance enhancement.....:x

Then I did some reading search myself and first point I discovered was x64 support !!

I want to run Vista 64 off my main power and Ubuntu 64 off MediaDirect button. Have either of you tried this yet?

Well, if MS wasn't dragging their feet so much on 64-bit support, manufacturers would be more inclined to provide 64-bit drivers. ;)
But of course you have a point too. :)

I've started just calling people out when they start throwing out the same tired old rumors ("There's no need to switch to 64-bit, and you'll save yourself a lot of compatibility problems by staying with 32-bit")
Ask the person whether he's actually *tried* running 64-bit recently. If they have, and have run into problems, they have a valid point. If not (and that's usually the case), asking them what they base their opinion on usually does the trick.

Jalf I believe if you really try and look for drivers (which is one of the main reasons for complaining) you will find them. Except if you have a Sony, or so I heard.

man, on vista x64 i have no problems with drivers but i believe the other ppl have!! but for shure that in some cases ppl just don't search. For e.g. I have a asus g1s and on asus support page for it does not "have" full drivers for x64 but if you download them and look inside it has x64 drivers. I've bean testing x64 vista and it's more fast, better, ok not faster, but more responsive ! i'm liking it. Ok ,there's problems with some programs that do not have signed drivers but there's allways a way around.

For most hardware, yes. Not all. There's still hardware where the manufacturer still can't be bothered to support anything other than 32-bit Windows. Sucky but true.

That's where the mentality needs to be changed. People must demand drivers!
