i just added another hard disk to my desktop and it doesn't seem to be detected either by the bios or windows.

i have one plugged on SATA (master) and 2 other drives (slave) plugged in the same parallel cable (which can be plugged 2 hard drives). but the drive plugged at the longer end side of the cable isn't detected. but i know the hard drive is working as it was working before when i had it plugged on at the shorter end of the cable.

are there any settings that i'm missing or the cable isn't good??

    please help...
    thanks in advance

How did you set the 2 parallel hard drives?

    Master - Slave?
    Both as Cable Select?

If they're set as Cable Select, do you have a Cable Select cable?

If they are both on the same parallel cable, set the first one (closest to the motherboard) to Master, and the second one (furthest from the motherboard) to Slave.

You can't have 2 drives on the same cable set to the same mode.

i dont think they have to be set depending on their connection position on the IDE cable, but there can be only one master and slave on a single cable and IDE channel.

    WackyT,

It is the drive on the connector furthest from the motherboard that is supposed to be set to "master" and the drive on the first connector (closest to the motherboard) is the "slave". You've got it reversed.

Skye2, I've always set it the way I described it for years (since '91) and never had any problems. As SideSwipe said, it doesn't matter which way you set it, as long as you only have one Master and one Slave per channel.

Okay. I believe you. :) When I had my desktop, I had it the way I described in my post. The other way didn't work for me.

thank you guys! now it's working.. it needed to be one master and one slave as you guys mentionned. and doesn't matter which goes master i think as i have the farthest set master and the closest to motherboard slave.

    reputation pts for everybody :)
