    What laptop do you have?

If you have a Dell, you could contact their tech support for a copy of 64 bit.

I guess you do own a Dell. You can always dual boot if you like. 64 bit can face some compatibility problems, but my own 64-bit compatibility problems just went away (thank you Cisco!).

With 3 GB of RAM, you probably won't notice any difference going from 32-bit to 64-bit. Also, most games don't have a 64-bit executable, so they'll run in 32-bit mode anyways.

u wont notice a difference with 64bit even with 4gigs. its not going to help. but all u need is a 64bit vista disk. the keys are interchangeable. and use activation backup so you dont have to call microsoft.

As long as you use a Dell OEM disk, you can actually install any copy of Windows and pass WGA. Dell OEM copies of Windows look at the BIOS to determine if it is a Dell machine, and if it is then you wont need to enter a license key or anything.

Doing so is probably breaking the EULA or something though.

-> Insert loud scream of shock <-

    Another 32 vs 64Bit thread...

OK - performance - depending on applications you may see an increase in performance.
However: Under normal use, you will not see any real difference.

Only if you run a 64Bit application under 64 Bit can you see a real improvement, 32Bit on a 64Bit system is the same speed or even slightly slower.

Disc - as said above, manufacturer, or you could contact Microsoft.
You may have to pay fot the disc though - the disc, not the actual license as you use the same license key.

64bit Vista will not execute any 16bit applications. Keep that in mind.

I wouldn't consider this an issue since I can't think of anything that's in 16-bit that I'd even consider using. It's such an anomaly that I'd suspect anybody running 16-bit software knows they are and, most likely, knows it won't work in 64-bit Vista.

is this version of vista 64 bit? Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1... I ordered a dell studio 15 and am awaiting its arrival!!! I talked to a dell tech and they didn't seem to sure about the answer. They did say that the version that came with my studio is 64 bit, but I just wanted to get a second oppinion, just in case.
    Thanks guys,
    Chris

also, if you do obtain a disk for the 64 bit upgrade, do you need to reinstall all the programs and drivers?
    thanks again,
    Any info will help,

    How should we know?
    Read the label.

Vista Home Premium, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate are all available in 32 an 64Bit.

If Dell is sending you the disk, then it's legit. Nothing to worry about.

I'm slightly confused. Did you order the computer with 32-bit Vista or 64-bit Vista?

thats the thing, the description doesn't specify if its 32 or 64 bit. I am sure it is genuine; I was just wondering if anyone knew if they could figure out by the title if this was 64 bit... Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1
I was wondering because I heard you can't really utilize over 2 gigs of ram unless you have a 64 bit system.
    Thanks,
    Chris

You'll get this disk for whatever version of Vista you ordered your computer with. For instance, if you ordered 32-bit Vista, then you'll get 32-bit Vista reinstall disks.

A 32-bit OS can address around 3.2 GB or RAM, while a 64-bit OS can address substantially more.
