i did some maintenance last night. defrag, registry defrag, some free space wiping. now i noticed i've lost about 18GB worth of disk space. it just so happens i've found an 18GB file in C:\System volume information. the file is named a bunch of letters and numbers and was created last night, it says. is it safe to delete this file?

it's not system restore. my system restore only has 1 point on it right now, definitely not the system restore. i'm guessing it's some file that was created in the middle of all my defragging. i have a feeling it would be safe to delete. just trying to get any input i can.

You said that you Wiped your drive. To wipe the program you use create a file to overwirte the old files.
Maybe the application you used forgot to delete it :D

That is almost certainly part of the system restore functionality. Can you provide us with the exact path and filename? It may also relate to your recycle bin as part of the mechanism for recovering things that were thrown away.

1 day later and the file is gone, the space is free again.
