    .doc to .pdf

    If someone could recommend a good program (i'm assuming there is no way around d/l a third party software) to convert MS Word files into Adobe Reader, that would be greatly appreciated. One that does not rearrange the spacing on its own.
    Links would be fantastic as well.

    Hello,

    Actually this can be done VERY easily, how easily? Simple as printing litterly. I used a program called Win2PDF. A simple program that let you print PDF files.

    Its not free but its worth the money.

    Uh, well, last time I checked... If you have acrobat reader installed, all you have to do is print to the Adobe distiller in word.
    Simple as that.
    In fact, you may be able to right click on the dock file and tell it to create a pdf out of it. Though this may require Acrobat professional.

    pm me your email add and i'll give you the software... it's solidpdf...

    it attaches itself into the menu of the ms word... you can save your documents into pdf format with different options (security, non-copy, non printing etc)

    the good thing is that pdf files can be converted back again into doc files.. good eh?

    you seem to be pretty tied to Office, but OpenOffice.org has PDF exporting built in. free of course.

    Yep, Open Office from www.openoffice.org. Free, opens Word documents with no problem and converts to PDF:

    Adobe Reader does not include the Distiller printer (at least no Reader 8 or 7).

    Or just wait for Office 2007 which is supposed to have built-in PDF capabilities.

    well the only problem i see with openoffice is that it does not retain the formats made with ms word.

    yep, it does create pdf files but does not convert it back.

    maybe the office 2007 will do the trick. wait for it

    An alternative suggestion would be to write your document in LaTeX, which can output to PDF by default. (It's also easier once you learn it, and produces much more consistent layout)

    But if you already have the .doc, there might be simpler solutions. ;)

    If you're used to MS Office, OpenOffice is extremely lackluster and I can't reccomend switching.

    There are also websites you can upload a .doc to and it will email you the file as a .pdf such as pdfonline.com or zamzar.com

    My experience is that OpenOffice is fairly good but not perfect at opening Word files. For example, if you have a document that has page numbers by section (e.g. i, ii, iii... for an intro section followed by 1, 2, 3.. for the rest), it doesn't pick up on that, and while I can't remember exactly the way to get it to do page numbering like that is logically quite different from how it works in Word. On the other hand, it does just fine with a lot of things, like the equation editor.

    I use CutePDF to make my PDF's.

    Yeah. But at least OpenOffice has always opened files it has created ;) I've saved files with Word that all of a sudden Word decides there's a problem with.

    I second OpenOffice, if you just want to convert a .doc into a .pdf. But if you want to print ANYTHING to a pdf, check out the ghostscript options and such. They won't give you the full, interlinked, nifty PDF's like Acrobat will, but they'll still be a PDF copy of the document.

    Fred NY, which of those links do I select? I tried the .zip one and it downloaded several folders, in which I cannot locate the .exe file. I'll try a different download.
