    From the original post:

“A similar thing happens in Android smartphones, which use wifi as part of their location services. Switching wifi off prevents it from connecting to wifi access points, but allows it to continue periodically scanning for access point names to help pinpoint its location.”

I’m not an Apple fanboy, but this is a bit of a tempest in a teapot.

On my dad's S7 they had those turned ON by default, I turned it OFF and he can watch videos and movies an hour longer.

Which may be because the wifi and BT are not using energy by actively looking for other things to connect to or doing a bunch of syncing in the background, as opposed to literally powering down the chips. As the article said, the chips are not being literally powered down on Android either, because they’re used for location services even when that toggle is set to “OFF.”

What you describe is probably equally true for iOS 11 devices. They’ll likely get battery life with those set to “off” in the control center because the device is not syncing in the background, even if they’re not literally powered down.

No, I’m talking about Google Location Services. The “WiFi” toggle in the notification shade doesn’t turn off WiFi for that purpose; you have to dive deep into settings to literally power it down:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/211186/how-to-disable-google-location-wi-fi-scanning-on-android/

Which is exactly how iOS 11 works. You can literally power down WiFi (instead of just preventing it from connecting to wifi networks for data purposes) by diving deep into settings; the control center toggle is equivalent to the notification shade toggle in Android.

I believe I turned it off in Marshmallow and after upgrade to N I haven't checked my dad's phone. Maybe I'll check and disable that. He did complain about battery not lasting on heavy usage. Thanks.

I believe on LineageOS without Google Services installed they're turned off for real.
