I'm planning a potential holiday to eastern Europe, and was wondering if someone here could give advice on mobile data plans.

I don't need talk or text, but I'd like data to help with not getting lost, planning, eating, etc.

Main cities of interest will be Prague, Bratislava, and Budapest. Maybe Vienna too if there's time.

I know most European countries have pretty cheap short-term prepaid data plans. Can I get one and roam other countries, or would I need to get a new SIM for each country I visit? What are good/popular options for travelers?

Check this awesome Wiki and put in each city and see if you can find a prepaid SIM that works in all areas you want to go.

Also, make sure that your phone supports all the frequencies the carrier uses and that if it isn't an unlocked phone, you call your carrier and get the unlock code (generally they'll give it to you if you say you need it for international travel).

If you have Android, I would download "Here" with corresponding map data from play store, so at least you have detailed maps of the area, as a back up plan just in case of no internet. For food and places of interest you can always ask, get brochures, improvise, but if you don't know where you're, that could get tricky, especially going to 3 different language zones and Google maps are pretty much useless without constant internet access, where "Here" maps will work just fine, especially in Europe. Also, if you have T-mobile you can call using wifi for free from any hotel to your home (don't call local), just don't pick up any incoming calls without local sim. Have a great trip.
