What functionality will I lose using LinageOS compared to basic android? Will I have google pay? Access to the play app store? I'm curious about this. If it all does work I may buy an older phone to play with.

you must have good OS build and all works fine
SE linux must works for PAY or similar action "integrity/security verification for GOOGLE PLAY"

    x MAGISK - for root

CM or LO ,,or FREE XPERIA ,,i using all time in all phones --best possitible system in phone
I don't know how anyone can work without a root :D

best is XDA --find phone / here all info about alternative OS

Usually none, if the build is not in beta. If it's in beta, you can check the corresponding ROM thread over at XDA Developers, where working and non-working functions are listed. In the past, you could sometimes degrade camera quality when flashing unofficial firmware. I remember that was the case with Samsung and Sony phones. Not sure if that's still the case and on budget devices you can usually improve quality over stock by using GCam modded to work with other devices by Arnova8G2 among other developers. I'm guessing camera quality isn't super important to you on a secondary device anyway.

As for Google apps and services, LineageOS doesn't come with GAPPS baked into the ROM while PixelExperience does. Simply flash the Open Gapps package you want after flashing the ROM and you will have them. Use of Google Pay requires your device to pass SafetyNet, and if left in a rooted state, it won't by default. There is, however, a module for Magisk which lets rooted devices pass SafetyNet, as mentioned in the previous post.

Are you looking at a specific older device to play with? Different vendors treat unlocking bootloaders differently and the SoC it's using also plays a role in how good third party ROM support for a device is. Snapdragons have a good reputation due to code distribution through Qualcomm Code Aurora.

Ah yes, interesting phone. I believe so, as the bootloader is easy to unlock and TWRP + LineageOS 18.1 is available for it. The only feature that appears to be broken is WiFi Display.
Did you mean SGH-T879, which is the T-Mobile Note 1? The SGH-T989 is the T-Mobile Galaxy S II. There might be a working build of CyanogenMod 12.1 (Android Lollipop, LineageOS was formerly known as CyanogenMod) for the SGH-T879 (quincytmo). I can only seem to find a Lollipop ROM based on CM called Candy5, as well as the github branch for cm-12.1. I don't think Google Pay would work with CyanogenMod 10.1 (Android Jelly Bean), which you can easily find flashable packages for.

Sorry, I owned both the sII and the Note. The note is sgh-i717. And I know about the lower versions of android, I was hoping to run something newer.

Buy a pixel 4 or 4a and install GrapheneOS. The author says by installing gApps you're being tracked and spoof mechanism like microG is a security threat/exploit.

@kojack a lot depends whether you want to run it with Google services or without them. There are alternative playstore clients, e.g. Aurora Store, which I actually prefer even on devices with Google stuff, due to flexibility. You will also gain additional functionality, like better audio quality over Bluetooth, additional settings, and overall much more flexible and straightforward experience. However, if you want LineageOS, you should pick a phone that has good support for it.

You should also consider Xperia 10 II, which should receive SailfishX support soon (full-blown Linux with proprietary GUI and Android 9 emulation).

You're over on XDA, you read about how to install Lineage, everyone says everything works. Cool. You install it and all of a sudden something, we'll call it "X", doesn't work. Back to XDA, you ask about "X", then they say"X" doesn't work but everything else does, huh, ok. So you get a little deeper into it and realize you can no longer use proprietary software "X", you liked software "X" and want it back but you can't have it because software "X" is linked to the stock framework. You no longer have the stock framework. I can go on here but you get the idea; ROMs can be a pain in the butt. Also a lot of fun if your somebody like me but I'd be prepared for issues which may or may not impact your use.

Excatly my views as well. This also boils down to 1. "shutting up windows", "speeding up windows", Running windows on mac hardware, and what not. I never have an issue with my windows installs. Everyone who crows about them being buggy etc are doing the aforementioned "shutting up of windows" etc imo. Run normal windows, your privacy is safe, I promise. you will magically not lose anythingthing by using windows in it's regular state. You will not lose your freedom by using android. The issues come when people start changing stuff. Jailbreaking iphones, rooting and roms on android, the shutting up of windows. Issues start then.

I asked about linage to get a more current OS on my old galaxy note. I won't be moving anything new to it. I am fine with google taking my annonymous data and using it to make money. I am not out anything, it does not hurt me in any ways, it does not cost me anything. WHO CARES. Now, if they started charging my credit cards unbeknown to me, then YES i would be pissed. However, that will not happen. The issue comes with third party apps, etc.
