Apple rolling out replacement program for iPhone 8 logic boards
    Peter Cao - Aug. 31st 2018 3:00 pm PT @iPeterCao
    https://9to5mac.com/2018/08/31/apple-rolling-out-replacement-program-for-iphone-8-logic-boards/

"Apple seems to be struggling with its hardware lately as the company has today began rolling out a replacement program for the iPhone 8.

The company says devices sold between September 2017 through March 2018 in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, and the U.S are affected.

(sometimes stock sits on shelves, so even if you bought after March 2018, I'd use the link below to check your serial number, IDK if US = Canada / North America...)

Just like most of Apple’s other repair programs, you’ll need your serial number handy as you’ll have to punch that into the program’s website.

As usual, devices that have any sort of physical damage such as a cracked screen will need to be repaired before getting sent in for service.

The repair will be free of charge as long as your iPhone 8 is in good shape. Apple does not mention whether or not this affects iPhone 8 Plus at this time. The program will be available up to three years after the original purchase of the device."

Check to see if your iPhone 8 is eligible here. <<===

As always, at least it's free. Mine are fine. I have had other issues with other brands of phones where, send it in at my expense, and gets shipped back at my expense. At least with apple I pay NOTHING for anything like this. Hell, they even replaced a broken screen in my son's iPhone 6s for free even when it was his fault. He never even had apple care.

I'm glad that my uncle got it from UAE, it seems most likely complaint is the antenna bands used/sold in India/China which differs from UAE. I gave it to my Mom since iOS11 made my head explode with telemetry unlike 10.3.3.
Intel WLAN/BT chipsets has some issues unlike qualcomm.

At least it's free? WOW!

your mentality is exactly why Apple continues to do what it does, lack of quality, and get away with it and still put a smile on the face of people.

This guys describes....well...exactly the mentality of Apple customers like yours

Not really. You mis understood what I was saying. One. It is a very small percentage of iPhones. Two, let’s not forget the many people who bought note flamethrowers, who only got so much towards a new phone instead of a free new phone. How quickly some forget.

Oh, BTW, Phoenix, I am NOT an apple Cultist...thats for sure. I just find the iPhone more polished and better to use than android devices. Just my OPINION. I dont run around proclaiming that apple is the be all end all, or go to my friends and family stating YOU NEED TO MOVE TO APPLE, it's so much better. my family just likes the itegration we all get with iphones/ipads. We all use (besides my oldest son who has an "image" to uphold) use windows based notebooks and desktops. I HATE MacOS, it's garbage. Mac computers are overpriced, underperforming dung heaps that are more prone to failure than other windows based devices. Just sayin'!

I’ve had every iPhone sine they first came out. Only had one lemon in that cycle - iPhone 4S which had to be replaced due to kernel panics. Since then, very reliable.

Me too. I have had the 4, 4s, 5s, 6s and now the 8. The only issues I have ever had was cracked screens. They have all been 100% reliable. I have owned 3 of each release too.

Both of the standard iphone 8s in our family are unaffected (not on the recall list), and the 8 plus is not included.

I've had the 3G, 4S, 5, 5S, SE, and now 8 plus. Every single one of them has been an excellent device (for the time), and have pretty much sealed the deal for me as far as staying on with Apple as my mobile device of choice. This is the ONE thing Apple does very well, and outside of the annoyance of using itunes, the iPhone is a superb device. There is a reason why it makes up 70% of apple's revenue.

Exactly. That's why we are staying with apple as well. I do have to return my wife's apple watch. After pairing with her 6s, it does not want to co-operate with her new 8. I spent 2 plus hrs with apple on the phone, tried everything to get it to recognize notifications and just NOPE. So, They have a new one on the way and we will return no questions asked. Great service from Telus and apple.

For one, I do not defend Apple etc. I think Apple computers are ****. For two, Apple phones, even if you have to return and get a new one are more reliable, faster, and more consistent than android phones. For three, apples integration with communication is better than android as well.

Hey, I'm a power user like many of us. Love having full control of my devices. Having said that, I've stuck with Apple phones due to the ability to jailbreak them and mold them to my liking.

My current phone is a 6 I bought in February of 2015 which still works fairly well. It does everything I need it to, some of which is no thanks to Apple.

I give credit where it's due- though I'll never buy a Mac computer again, their phones fit the bill for me.

No, Apple just needs to move into the present and future of laptop and desktop computing. TOUCH! a 2 in 1 macbook pro with pencil support and touch and foldable imac (a la surface studio) and I would be a complete apple user. But their computers are in the past.

But that would cannabalize their ipad pro.....keep dreaming ;)

same reason why iphone SE never got a refresh, it ate too much into their iphone 6s and 7 sales since it was just as powerful but 250$-300% cheaper.

I was Steve Jobs's follower but nowadays I stay away from Apple. My mom uses an iphone because she's okay with it and my close relatives use iPhones until it fails(more than 5 yrs). Unless you plan to use the device for long, iphones are good.

Don’t kid yourself. Apple is no less capitalistic than Samsung or HTC. Sure, they support the devices with updates for twice as long as the competition (about 4 years for Apple; 2 years with Google), though that is partially due to the lack of support from component supplies such as Qualcomm. Your pretty new iPhone will become slowly neutered as Apple in its wisdom of knowing what is best for its customer will not realize throttling taking place nor lack of availability of key features. Key features that are really necessary in the first place.

If you really want to know what makes Apple tick, I encourage you to watch this video:

Linus’s iMac Pro was just an example of Apple’s attitude towards its customers. The point I would like to make here is that Apple’s offer of 4 year OS support is meaningless in an age where technology changes rapidly. Apple doesn’t care about you or I as individuals. Just how to sell us new phones in a heavily saturated market. If you wanted to keep your phone for the length of time YOU wanted to (let’s say 5 years like a laptop), you would be unable to use your smartphone for anything other than making calls. The App Store would no longer offer apps compatible with your phone. Apple’s continuously evolving SDK would make sure that current apps are not compatible.

Apple is not about performance. It is about making sales. You are thinking about Apple and iPhone as a fanboy. You are certainly entitled to. Take a step back and see what they are really offering. In the end, it is just a phone. Software and applications look different and in some cases work better. Apple’s software support is no different than MS. Just more clandestine. Whereas MS’s stupidity makes it very obvious, Apple tries to court its customer base with fig leaves.

Nowhere am I saying not to buy an iPhone. I’ve pre-ordered every iPhone since 2007. Camped out overnight in 2008 outside the ATT store. Been a long-time listener of TiPB and later iMore podcasts. But, really listen to what they say - Apple’s crap doesn’t stink.

My iPhone X is buggy. I get insanely tired of having to retype my password into the iTunes Store app on the iPhone despite having the wonderful face-id. Alternative browsers on iPhone can’t save webpages to the home-screen. These are but just a few of my observations regarding how “wonderful” Apple is with software.

The iPhone is eye-candy. It is a status symbol to be showing off. As a $1200 piece of technology, it is garbage. I upgrade my iPhone every year because I know that keeping the same device for longer than that will make my eyes cringe. Apple software support. 4 years. Never get there. Battery will be long dead before then.

You obviously are not. Seeing I never once said APPLE RULES EVERYTHING ELSE SUCKS....I stated, as far as software support goes, apple is the best. Nothing more...nothing less. if you get fanboy out of that statement....it is you that are a fanboy of something else.

This is 100% true. Android phones are lucky to get updates for a year, never mind 2 years, and the updates are slow to patch security issues. Apple keeps on top of this, and the 5S has had the longest support in the history of any phone, stretching from initial iOS 7 now through iOS 12. Quite impressive if you ask me.

Now this could happen with any make/model of phone or hardware. Point being - the promise of future software updates is meaningless. I view these software updates as being no different than the computer BIOS updates. My only reason for updating the software now is because IT will disable email/messaging services if not at the most current release. Also, to get rid of that annoying badge marker hovering over the settings button. Have noticed recently, though, that the OS updates while plugged in and over WiFi. I wake up and the update is already completed.

There was a time when us iPhone users looked forward to the Easter eggs being introduced by the updates. We thought were on cloud 9 compared to our android counterparts at the time. To have a device that was always up to date and could do everything we needed it do, when called upon. Apple’s software update process made jailbreaking unnecessary since previously unheard of features could now be realized without impacting device security.

Apple perfected the process of regularly pushing out software updates first via Loony Tunes and then OTA. Because Apple controlled both the software and hardware, it was able to release the updates much, much quicker and consistently then the android counterparts. Keep in mind that not all android devices are created equally. Nexus or Pixel android software are pushed out monthly by Google directly. With other OEMs/ODMs, you get what you paid for and are lucky to receive anything else before upgrading the phone.

Except it's NOTHING like bios updates. It's the equivalent of moving to a new Version of windows every time. NOT A BIOS UPDATE. If that's what you compare it to, you have NO idea what you are talking about.

    From: https://stackoverflow.com/questions...etween-the-firmware-and-the-operating-system#

    In the simplest terms:

    OS

Contains the kernel, a graphical user interface (GUI) or at minimum a command line interface (CLI) that utilizes hardware for file management

    Kernel

Part of the OS software, the doorkeeper and translator between the OS and the hardware.

In other words (from Wikipedia), the kernel's primary function is to mediate access to the computer's resources:

    • -CPU
    • -RAM
    • -I/O
    • -System Calls
    Firmware

    • By definition, Firmware is any instructions stored on ROM.
    • Firmware is a play on words for something between software and hardware, referencing the spectrum for "ease of modification"
    • Firmware is independent of the OS an exception that blurs the lines is when the entire OS is stored in ROM, thus by definition considered Firmware
    • Firmware typically contains the bootstrap program which loads the OS kernel
    • Firmware is the bare minimum instruction to orchestrate multiple general-purpose hardware components
    • Firmware is not needed if you fully customize/print your logic/instructions with VLSI onto your very own circuit (I think this is important to realize when talking about firmware)
    • Firmware is on consumer products like an RC car, OS is not
    • Firmware is in all/majority of electronics, OS is not
    • Virus in firmware may never be detected or removed. Virus on an OS can be cleared with a fresh install
When you power on your computer:

Firmware → Kernel → Full OS

    Also, https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/IPSW_File_Format

From this link, note how many versions of firmware are available for “current devices”: http://www.iphonehacks.com/iphone-model-firmware-file

The OTA update you are getting contains both the firmware and the OS. We have seen many times over across different phones and computers the risk posed by OTA updates. Here is one for iPhone:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8342187

Here is one for the Pixel 2:

    https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-2-android-oreo-brick-fix/

    Here is one for Windows:

You sure about that? Each new version of iOS is intended to leverage the new device. The update’s are modified by iPhone version due to differences in physical capability. Windows OS is platform agnostic. Doesn’t matter if you run it on a tablet, virtual machine, or desktop. Same Windows. Look at the software revision numbers of Apple updates. Always includes two numbers separated by a comma (e.g., 1, 1). See link in previous post for cross-reference with iOS number.
