Recommend me a file explorer / manager for android.

I've previously always used ES file explorer but the amount of bloat and ads in the newer versions is terrible.

    Got anything better?

    Here is a suggestion: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.root.browserfree&hl=en

I hate the look and feel of their latest version. It's tacky-looking and reminds me of Windows 10 way too much, but the app has always been good for me. The attractive UI of the classic version is also still available... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummyapps.rootbrowser.classic&hl=en

I agree with you about ES File Explorer. I used to love it and bought it because it used to be really excellent, but now it's a piece of crap and I won't even install it.

I use to use "File Manager HD" until a security company found it was sending all you phone/tablet data to China.

I now use an no root firewall link below, It stops apps sending your all my data to China, Russia, ect, It also blocks some adverts.

It also show all the countries any app sends your data to, USA, UK, Ect and allows you to block them, So you can still use the app in safety.

There is a black list of unsafe countries the app asks you to block when it first starts, the choice is your`s

I have been using the firewall app for months, no problems, It`s takes seconds to install and remove

Samsung's "My Files." It's not the best file browser ever made, but I know who made it and know it's not a fly-by-night scam to steal my data. Third-party file browsers with no clear financial incentive for the developer make me nervous.

That said, I've used Solid Explorer File Manager in the past and been happy.

I was blown away when I first got my Nexus 9 that vanilla Android doesn't have a first-party file browser. And people say OEM skins never add anything useful...
