i predict AT&T will have a .99¢ online sale sometime between now and 12/25--just like they did to me a month after i bought the titan at a $200 contract price two years ago. follow/keep an on eye on @ATTDeals if you really want to make your money back.

If it doesn't work out you could always just use it as a dinner serving tray.

I want, at the absolute total biggest, a 4.8" version (since Nokias usually have a wider surround) of this.

At 5.5" with my Note 2, I definitely intended to go down in size. That's why I was initially going to for the Nexus 5. There's so much hate for Windows Phone in my thick headed group of friends who haven't ever tried one out. I prefer to give it a shot before passing judgement though and the 1520 is the current flagship. That's how I ended up switching from its to Android.

The Lumia 929 is a 5.0" version of the Lumia 1520. Identical hardware except for screen size. I think that's as close as you're going to get, at least in the short term.

Guarantee it doesn't have that same 3400mAh battery of the 1520 though. Supposedly it's a 2000mAh.

That's one of the beautiful things about bigger phones... bigger batteries.

agreed. it will have the newer gorilla glass 3 (40% more scratch resistant, yay), but supposedly no expandable storage. even if the 929 is a verizon exclusive stateside, it might still be available elsewhere to vogelbung in the europe--but i can understand if 5" is still too big to be carrying around ten of them.

my order update: AT&T 1520s are now backordered, estimated shipping sometime between thursday and monday... :(

my order update: 1520 just hopped on the redeye from memphis. expected delivery tomorrow morning. :D

even though mrXniick already has one, maybe i'll do a little write-up this weekend after i've had a couple days to play with it. i have this feeling it'll have been the best $100 i've spent in awhile.

A 5" with the requisite-for-durability Nokia bezel surround is still a dinner tray.

I'm wondering how much longer I have to hold out for Nokia to intro a true flagship successor to the Lumia 800 - i.e. even a 4" screen. That's basically the form factor I want. Slightly bigger maybe, but definitely not a 5" with a Nokia-sized bezel. I want a phone, not something I can eat a sub off.

not looking back from my TV dinner tray in the slightest, and it lost its TV dinner tray-ness after ~48 hours. i think i'd probably take this device over a <5" form factor at this point -- which i didn't think would be the case when i first opened the box. definitely niche and definitely not for everybody though.

I thought my Galaxy S3 was huge when I got it...and at 4.8", coming from a 3.6", it was. Now I'm seriously considering a Galaxy Note 3. For me as well, extra size is something I got comfortable with, and then I started to rely upon.

I know what you guys mean.. I went from a iP4S to the Note 2. In theory, I want something smaller. As soon as I see an iPhone or even my gf's HTC One, I don't think I could enjoyably drop down in size by much.. Everything seems cramped and puny :p

The difference may be that I'm not expecting a phone to be the one device on the move. It's a fundamentally unproductive device and at the size where it becomes somewhat worthwhile for uses beyond "glance and go", it's too damned large as a phone.

Interesting news re: Sony. I don't see it happening though - MS would have to nix all XBox Live / XBox Music / XBox Video functionality from WP for the Sony image for them to consider it (at least if Sony have their marbles). It'd depend on the quality of the Sony substitution services, but I don't see them being any good - it seems to me it would likely damage WP's image among buyers of Sony handsets more than anything else.

Sony didn't make Microsoft nix the Xbox Music and Xbox Video functionality from my Vaio Duo 11 or any of the other Sony Win8.x products. My Vaio Duo 11 came with Xbox Music AND Sony Music Unlimited installed. I don't see why Sony couldn't do the same with a phone.

Wouldn't do Sony much good - and it would be revealing to compare metrics on how many people actually crank up that Sony Music Unlimited, or even Playmemories on a PC (I know I unpinned / uninstalled them straight away). And if I were Sony staff with a clue, I'd know that - and that the primary entry point to get people on your apps / ecosystem is in mobile.

I hereby call a revival to this thread. I have since purchased, no contract, a Lumia 1520. Kit-n-kabootle. I've got the QI Wireless charging dock, phone, 64GB MicroSD, all of it.

It's working wonderfully ATM. Also, the camera is something Android users should wish for. Perfect white balance every time. Astonishing, really, as Android usually has so much trouble with that in flash environments.

I don't think it's possible to kill the 1520's battery in a day. 24 hours isn't enough time to drain it.

That's. Amazing.

Well, it's not even getting warm during gaming, and they don't seem to suck the battery down any faster actually.

Speaking of benchmarks, it's Antutu score was 25,749. The 1020 gets ~12,000.

really? mine gets noticeably warm, hot almost, during video playback. nevermind gaming. the chip is clearly in the upper-right corner (when looking at the back).

have you experienced any volume control issues yet? there's definitely a bug that i haven't quite nailed down how to trigger, but it has something to do with the audio initialization of certain content. once triggered all volume control is lost -- won't even mute though it displays the level changing -- and it only comes back with a soft reset. i'm averaging once-a-week soft resets. haven't decided if i want to get a replacement under warranty yet, but i'm contemplating it. i've seen the same issue reported elsewhere.

i agree with you though, and i stand by my reddit quote: the battery life is phenomenal.

Nope. Mine has yet to even get warm. I was charging it after I pulled it out of the box and using it quite heavily at the same time and that's the warmest I've felt it.

Volume issues... again, nope. :/ The only issue I've run across on mine pertains to Bluetooth. I have to re-pair my headphones every time I want to use them, otherwise the bit-pool gets screwed up and just plays random snippets of audio. Also, I can reliably cause a kernel panic with Bluetooth. lol. Needs work there. The audio quality when it does work is fantastic, though. Very high bitrate negotiation... not sure if Nokia uses Apt-X or not. Haven't looked into that.

What hardware revision do you have?

I have exactly the same.

Maybe you have a badly binned SoC. Qualcomm has a history of this. Some get HOT. Some run cool. Some can stand MUCH lower voltages while others have to have max voltages. My first Nexus 4 got so hot I thought it would discolor the glass after a few heatups. But then my current Nexus 4 (the white model that's a later hardware revision) runs quite cool, handles low voltages, and overclocks quite well.

Luck of the draw, almost. IMHO, I think you should get a warranty swap.

this is only slightly on-topic and more of an update to the last few posts -- but i really have to hand it to AT&T. just hung up with tech support and they've agreed to replace my dinner plate under warranty. the phone call lasted less than a half-hour. best part is that they've agreed to replace my white handset with a yellow one. i almost went red but i've read that the glossy body is more susceptible to scratches. i'll be beyond satisfied if i get a brand new device, but i'm expecting a refurb. thanks again, H.A.L., for urging me to request the replacement. here's to hoping this one runs cooler and with no volume issues!

Yep. AMAZING display. Only thing is the sunlight legibility is basically what I thought it was though... it blows out colors and contrast.

Meanwhile, people can rag on Windows Phone left and right. They can say what they want. But one thing Microsoft has done an absolutely stellar job of has been the messaging hub. The integration of accounts, the SkyDrive integration... I mean it's just perfect.

I just like the fact that the basic functions more or less work without them breaking in really odd/strange ways because of some random option that's easily toggle-able like in Android that won't give you any clues as to what is enabled that broke it.

Though I wish Skype resumed a bit faster when I got calls on my 925, I do use it for work after all = 3 =

if it makes you feel any better i got my "certified like-new" refurb and was able to get a good sense of where it came from:

so that means it's been sitting at an AT&T warehouse since at least two months before release and ended up as a refurb for who knows what reason.
oh, and since i claimed a free copy of halo:SA with the original purchase -- now i apparently can't download it at all. not even sure who to contact about that either.

Howdy folks,

Does anyone else have the Nokia Lumia 928 from Verizon? It's based on either the 920 or 925 (can't remember) with the only difference being the addition of a Xenon flash. So this question also goes out to anyone with a 920/925.

My display freezes up intermittently and the only thing I can do is a 'soft reset', which is done by pressing the volume down button and on/off button and holding them simultaneously until it powers off. But sometimes it takes me 10 or more attempts to even get the soft reset to work!

The freezes don't happen a lot and I've had it happen two days in a row and then go more than a month without a problem. But it really irks me that it's happening at all. And there are countless postings on message boards all over the place about other 928 users having the same issue.

Anyone else here have this problem? And advice or tips?

HAHAHAHAHA. Just as I'm about to erase the handset to get rid of, "An update is available".

I guess I'm going to have to give Black a try...

Great timing there, Nokia/MS :D

So Windows Phone 8.1 got unveiled today, and while I wouldn't call its new features unique (the notification shade is very derivative, Cortana is just another version of Siri/Google Now, and Swype-style typing is definitely borrowed from Android keyboards), I do think they do a great job of plugging three big holes in the WP8 feature list. If my carrier (US Cellular) carried a flagship-spec WP8.1 phone, I'd definitely make the jump back to Windows Phone.
