Xiaomi recently responded to the globally increasing demand for large smartphones when they launched the Mi Note PRO, a 5.7" phone that earns its flagship status by retaining all the bells and whistles at an attractive price tag. Those belonging to the performance oriented crowd may rejoice, as while other manufacturers try to tame their Snapdragon by downclocking it, Xiaomi chose to bump the clock speed of their S810 to 2.5GHz. How do they intend to cope with the heat? Apparently the SoC batch used is of the v2.1 model, which is also backed up by 4 graphite fins to spread the heat evenly, one of the fins being double-layered. According to Xiaomi's newly leaked roadmap, only the Mi 4S is expected to fend off the mid-sized, high-end competition sometime in the interim between now and the Mi 5's launch this fall, and it does not offer more than the Note PRO.

If it wasn't for the IMX214 main-shooter, I might have been tempted to give this giant a go.

810 OC with graphite fins? That's some serious madness.

This is not the first time Xiaomi has used graphite spreaders, but OCing a chip that's known to overheat at stock is on a whole new level.

I remember reading about heat-pipes being used in smartphones for the first time when NEC introduced the Medias X. Even though they're not the last to have used a passive heat-spreader, I was hoping we'd see more high-end phones make use of the concept since it makes a whole lot of sense. The phones that are the most mainstream in Western countries that come with similar cooling technology is probably Sony's Z-series, as Sony have been employing liquid heat-pipes starting with the Z2.

All this talk about thermal management and we've got another overheating scandal at our hands. Ouch.

But don't they do pre-release stressing testing?
