Although there have always been a few exceptions, for years, many Android tablets were 16:10 or so. Compared to a more-square tablet like the iPad, this made for a better video experience (less of the screen lost to black bars) but was less desirable for web browsing and productivity work.

It seems like that's now changing. First the Nexus 9 went 4:3, then the Asus ZenPad line did, and now the Galaxy Tab line is following suit.

So...is this a good thing or a bad thing? I'm not super thrilled, since I largely use tablets for watching video, but I'd be interested what other people have to say.

I would like to see a poll, to see how many NBR members would prefer 4:3 over 16:9/10 , I remember the bring back 4:3 notebook display`s thread on NBR, But i prefer 16:9/10 and would never buy an 4:3 tablet o_O

Give me an A4 tablet now, take my money

Honestly in the world where tablets are used as media consumption, 4:3 doesn't really make sense. Android will scale but eh. When you watch a movie you have the black bars and its just meh. 16:10 was standard because that what was being mass produced. Like 4:3 on a professional workstation monitor makes sense, media consumption? Nope.

16:10 is fine, you get a little more height for browsing, and 16:9 video can be stretched to 16:10 without a real distortion problem, with 4:3 you cannot stretch to 16:9 to 4:3 it will look stupid, and if you watch 16:9 on an 4:3 oled display you run the risk of burn-in as there will be large black bars on the top and bottom of the video depending on usage.
