i've been browsing this forum but i havent seen much info on the full zonealarm security suite (if there is one, sorry in advance).
I'd like to know how zonealarm compares to the other big 2. i'm currently looking for a single suite that can cover everything and fromt he posts preventing viruses imo is better than finding them and then destroying them.
I remember zonealarm had a great firewall, but how is the rest of its security suite?
Also how does the kaspersky/Eset firewall compare to zonealarms?
thanks!

i used zonealarm for a few months, it was terrible. honestly one of the worst antivirus i have ever used. Eset is my favorite, i will never use anything else. (fanboy talk there but it is true)
the firewall is fine, the antivirus is great. i love it, but most of the protection comes from you. don't be stupid and you won't have a virus.
kaspersky and eset both use the same engine, but eset uses it better. -
Yeah, Eset is hands down the best. Zonealarm isn't that great.
-
Antivirus: Eset > Kaspersky. Zone Alarm = Kaspersky. ZoneAlarm have the same engine as Kaspersky. All of the 3 does a excellent job.
Firewall: ZoneAlarm > Kaspersky > Eset. Eset firewall does a decent job, ZoneAlarm is the best firewall but all the 3 does a good job.
Resources: Eset >>>>> ZoneAlarm > Kaspersky. ZoneAlarm and Kaspersky use a lot more resources than Eset, which is very light.
NOD32 ftw -
I'm leaning towards Eset then, so i'd like to know, how well is it's firewall? -
Hi,
some facts:
FW test: http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php
AV test: http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/comparatives.html
now you can compare which fw and av is the best.
I don't like suite security products. I think almost always the better solution is using two separate software not one with all-in. -
I wouldn't use the firewall component to any of these suites. Go with Online Armor or Comodo.
-
good call,
i'm thinking of using
AV: avira
FW: Comodo
would that cover msot of the security issues? -
like i said before, you don't NEED an antivirus, just don't be dumb. Avira and comodo will cover everything good enough. i suggest eset because it uses the least system resources and provides very good protection for the price. But there are free antiviruses that can do almost as good a job.
also, eset is updated multiple times per day, so you get very up to date protection. -
Hi,
i found some test of memory usage of few FW and AV.
Firewall memory usage:
translation:
-blue color means: Memory usage
-red color means: Peak Memory Usage
Antivirus memory usage:
translation:
-blue color means: Memory Usage in normal mode
-red color means: Memory usage during the scan -
Let me just reply to it ONE more time, and really, this is the last time;
Kaspersky and ESET do NOT, I repeat, do NOT use the same engines.
Both companies develop their own technology.
Kaspersky does give their AV technology into license to several other AV products but NOD32 or the ESET suites are not among those.
Cheers.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Thanks for all the information guys!

So finally what is your choice? -
at this point i have a good deal on kaspersky, so do the 30 day trial right now, and if its good i'll keep then, if not i'll move onto nod and just stick to that. seems like those 2 are the major players in the game
-
Used NOD32 for like a year (ver.2) then upgraded to ver.3 didn't like it that much. So I got KIS ver.8 so far so good I prefer its UI over NOD32. KIS scanning seems to be a lot faster.

So far, I've tried Avira+Comodo, AVG Internet Security, ESet SS, and KIS.
KIS wins by a margin. Feature plenty, and good on resources. The default settings are perfect for most users, but for advanced users, detection, filtering tools, and rules are highly customizable and easy to modify.
ESet comes in second. Less customizable but is very user friendly with a simple easy to use interface, light on resources, generally a good all in one security suite. I would recommend this to most normal users not interested in monitoring every single port, but just wanting a piece of mind in knowing that a good security system is working behind the scenes.
AVG is another good suite. Even easier to use than ESet, though heavier on resources. I had to disable certain protection modules (linkscanner) in speed up internet surfing. Least customizable out of all the suites.
Lastly, Comodo+Avira Free are feature plenty and highly customizable, however both when added together uses up the most resources. The leaning curve on using comodo firewall pro is pretty high as well. Without proper training of the program itself, users are generally bombarded with allow/deny prompts. At one point, it reminded me of the dreaded UAC prompts in vista.
zonealarm ss vs KIS, vs Eset SS
