I am currently trying out the 6month free Premium license of Avira Anti-vir, and I really like it. It is fairly light on resources, unintrusive, and does a great job.

Otherwise, I'm sure most other apps work on x64. I haven't had a problem with McAfee, Avast, Norton, or Avira on my x64 Ultimate.

JCMS is referring to Norton Internet Security 2008. Apparently it has gotten a lot better on system resource usage. Norton's detection and removal rates are typically (from what I understand) outstanding.

If you are looking for a good paid AV try Kaspersky. It is fairly light on resources and does an excellent job at detection and prevention. I like NOD, but I understand if you want to look for something else.

When you install avast on a 64bit OS avast will install its 64bit antivirus version. Don't worry that you only see one installation package available for avast; that installer once run will detect what OS type you are currently using and install the 32bit antivirus if you are on 32bit and install 64bit antivirus if you are on a 64bit OS.
