NOTE: It is highly recommended that you uninstall any other antivirus products detected before installing BitDefender. Running two or more antivirus products at the same time on a computer usually renders the system unusable.

    that's a quote when I downloaded BitDefender
is it really true that running a lot of antivirus software could make them useless?

Bottom line is that you can experience a lot of problems having more than 1 av installed at the same time.
Problems such as crashes, instability, conflicts between the av's, slowdowns of the OS (they may be free an light, but pile them up and they will suck up the resources pretty much).

Now granted, running more than 1 av programs is not a recipe for disaster because some people run more than 1 without issues ... however, bottom line is, it's useless and can cause more damage than worth.
Just stick to 1 (MSE, since it has the best detection rates compared to Avira and Avast) and Windows Firewall, and you'll be fine.

BitDefender ON TOP of everything you already have?
Really now, why did you go and install and are running 3 av's at the same time to begin with?
    Increased security?
You won't really get it, and you'll probably end up with more problems.

Only run one Antivirus at a time. If you install more than one, they will conflict with each other and cause terrible system performance, as well as hindering their ability to actually clear out viruses.

You made the right choice removing all but one.

In my opinion, I think you made a mistake installing BitDefender.
Using MSE, Avast or Avira (just 1, and not 2 or all three) would be more than enough for your needs, and all of them are free (BitDefender is NOT).

Why bother paying for something which you will never use to the fullest ?
