when i search for something in google lets say "BBC" it will come up with the correct results however when i click on one of the links it will open it up in a new window and will send me two a totally different website. I dont know if this is a virus, worm or spyware. I have Norton 360 but that doesnt see to have picked anything up.

Any help would be much appreciated

That is almost certainly some sort of malware. Try some of the free scanners listed here. It's possible that .Norton isn't picking it up because that got infected as well.

Like Shyster1 already mentioned, use a couple of (free) antimalware/spyware programs.
F.i., MalwareBytesAntiMalware (MBAM), SUPERAntispyware (SAS) and DrWeb CureIt.
Also make sure to reset your router and use a non-standard user name and password.
For MBAM; download it, rename the MBAM installer (abc.exe), install MBAM, rename MBAM.exe (M.exe), update MBAM and then do a full scan.
Download links can be found through my signature.
    Cheers.
