i currently have window defender, avast, antivir and the firewall (vista) turned on. As i'm reading the archives i came accross several post that beware of running multiple spyware at the same time. just last week antivir notified me of an infected file i had received from a classmate. it worked? but now that i think about it avast didnt see it coming...so which of these should i disable? i'm toying with the idea of keeping antivir, but since it caught the trojan i had, obviously looks like i can keep running everything right? what about window defender? on or off?

    confused

IMO, I would kee one of each.. I would suggest leaving windows defender on as well as the firewall on... use one AV (either Avast or Avira or whatever you prefer - threatfire is a good one too, for real time protection) and one good on-demand antispyware like superantispyware or MBAM for regular or weekly scan'....

ok thanks for the response, i kept everything and just disabled resident scanner on avast, i was actually trying to turn off on access scanner, which i think is what just happened, but now avast just works as a scanner, but i kinda want to reactivate it and off the firewall instead, but i don't want no problems with avast and antivir

... it has a few pros and cons about the need for more modules.

Conventional wisdom is that you should keep 1 AV on. Both Avast and Antivir are very good AV's that also have good spyware detection (see http://www.virusbtn.com/Session-607d8fbf592289c94e9a963f91db51db/news/2008/09_02).

No AV will protect you completely however so you can do other things such as using behaviorial antimalware like Threatfire. You can also turn on Advanced Membership to Spynet in Windows Defender that will look out for certain behaviors including start up menu changes, installation of drivers and services, installation of IE addons etc. There are other approaches and if you really need help, try asking in www.wilderssecurity.com
