    Hello,
I'm not sure if this has been posted before, sorry if it has been.
I'm wondering if nod32 is better than avira or the other way round?
I'm currently using nod32 v2 and i'm not planning on switching to v3 anytime soon.
I'd be delighted if anyone can provide their opinion.
    Thanks.

Nod32. It's lighter and has slightly better detection.

I thoroughly suggest you switch to NOD32 v3, if not then i suggest you switch to Avira as NOD32 v3 is much better than v2 and even better than Avira but with v2 against Avira, Avira wins.

first off the newest avira is just as light if not lighter than nod. yes ive used both and yes ive checked used resources by both during scans and idle.

i bought nod3.0 actually i was a nod user for many many years since the first version. i hated version 3.0 way to many issues and bugs that were never getting fixed and i had them build after build. it is def a good av is it the best imo no. it has been shown by av comparatives as well as many other sites that avira beats it (the paid version). i actually have 3 cases of missed REAL virus' by nod causing me to fully format and reinstall. when i scanned with avira, f-secure, avg, kaspersky, nortons, and dr web (all od which i own or owned at the time i like to play with them all but def only one at a time) all of the above found those virus' and nod did not ever show me anything about them. that for me was the last straw.

i personally really like avira and i did use it. they imo are pretty expensive though for the paid version more so than most other av's. so this time i passed. avira has stellar detection but is not the top as far as removal imo. avira is a better av than a firewall imo. if you are looking at the suite the only tihng that i feel needs to be better is the firewall. otherwsie you would be looking at the stand alone av. be warned though that avira def does have a higher fals positive rate than most so be careful what you delete when it tells you. that file may be a fp.

i ended up just for the heck of it picking up a couple 3 user kasperskies from amazon which were free after rebates.while version 7 was pretty nice... version 2009 (or otherwise called version 8) simply rocks. imo its as light as nod or avira and personally better in a lot of areas. has a great av and a great firewall.

there are soooo many av's out there the only way i feel anyone can really settle on one is to try them all. almost every av has a free trial. try it and see what you think. most new av's have 97% or higher detection rate and ALL WILL MISS SOME THINGS.. no av will ever pick out every threat or virus. for me 3 missied by nod was to many and they were ones picked up by so many other av's that was my reason i ditched it.
www.wilderssecurity.com is one of the best security sites out there take and ask some questions you may have im sure you will get a lot of great info.

also see avcomparatives web site for actual testing done

I've never had any problems at all with NOD, but neither did Kaspersky nor TrendMicro when I used them, cause issues or allow viruses onto my machines.

Recent tests show that Avira's av engine is superior. It has better heuristics but also more false positives (though it is not unacceptable). NO32 tends to be third, behind Avira and Kaspersky

I had heard that Kaspersky 2009 is a big improvement over the past versions in terms of resources and improvements in the engine but if you're looking for something lighter on resources then go with NOD32. Price may also be a factor.

kaspersky 2009 is just as light if not lighter than nod v3. i own both. full suite with 2009 is less than 30mb total ram usage. nod v3 is more than that, also kis2009 has 0 noticable system impact on any of the 20 or so systems we have it on. we trust it for our business'

just checked on this system im typing on.. total is just over 25mb total ram usage all features installed. that is impressive imo especially for the full suite

I suggest you switch from v2 to Avira (free version) if you don't have the money, i suggest you switch to NOD32 v3 to get all the updated features and improvements. Kaspersky 2009 may be alright but as i said, it may be a factor of price for you or it may be a factor or the engine strength. NOD32 v3 and Kaspersky 2009 are pretty much level on the engine terms so it may just be price to you, or if you prefer to stay with a familiar interface.

Not wishing to get into that debate at this point in time but I have the latest version of NOD and have nothing but praise for it. I'm also not a fan of fully 'integrated' security suites. If you are not planning on updating NOD then your decision of one of a better (imo) albeit older piece of software versus a weaker but more 'up-to-date' piece of freeware.

You could try Avast! or even AVG if you're looking for good free ware ones.

^ two posts above. We just got unlucky xD. Apparently their servers are like... bleh, lots of people are having trouble updating. I just switched to Avira too, but I think I'll be patient and wait for their servers to come back up, then give Avira my monthly 'trial'.

I have used Avast for two years w/o any problems until ver. 8 started conflicting with Outlook (the primary reason I had it). I am now trying Avira Premium with a 90 day license. I have since installed the free Avira personal edition on my two kid's laptops. All seems to be working well on both XP and Vista platforms.

EDIT - OK, my kids are pi$$ at me because of the pop-ups when Avira updates. Back to Avast!

I think Avira Premium is better than Classic, has any-spyware implements and the updates of viruses list are faster and without problems (ex. pop-ups).
    http://www.free-av.com/en/products/2/avira_antivir_premium.html

I think it is not too much to spend about 62$ for 3yrs for complete security of my system. But its my opinion :)

if you will choose between the two.....go for AVIRA.

if you will check AV Comparative test.....avira is on the top compare to NOD.

    though, i used Kaspersky2009
