    hello guys!

I just got my new sxps 16 from Dell. I am planning to get a good all round security system for my lappie, as I generally stay online almost all day :D and as a grad student a lot of downloading and uploading takes place all day.

Now I have read great reviews about both Norton Internet Security 2010 and the Kasparsky Internet Security 2010. However my past experience with norton tells me that the excellent protection would come at a hefty performance compromise :( :( . I have read about symantec fixing that problem though! But I am not sure whether its true.
On the other hand, I have not heard of such complaints against KIS 2010.
WHich one should I buy? Please help me out guys. :)
    Thanks

I have Norton 360 and it feels seamless of both my laptop and desktop. However, my father who has a Ahtlon X2 laptop with 1.5GB of RAM says it really slows it down

I guess you have 4GB of RAM and a Core i7? Norton will only use page file so you will not even notice it.

Norton slowed down my system start up for 45sec. Kaspersky and Bitdefender and MSE are the best in terms of performance.

Norton 2009 is amazing, god knows how I put up with NIS 2007...

2010 could only be better so I would go with Norton.

It does? Checked how much ram it uses? Both my Norton 360(V3) and "Task Manager" tells me it only uses below 10MB of my RAM.

At the time I'm writing this Norton (ccSvcHst.exe) has only used 4MB, the only application besides Firefox that uses alot of memory for me is Skype.

RAM usage is irrelevant....your SXPS 16 has 4 gigs of it.

out of the 2 nis2010 for sure. i have to say im trialing the new avast internet security 5 and it VERY nice.. maybe another one to look at.

for the people that notice the slowdown with nis2010 change the pagefile size to be a bit larger and you should see a improvement on older systems.

    ....What's SXPS 16?

I forgot to add, so far 360 have only used abut 1-2% MAX in CPU load - but in either way I haven't experienced my computer being slower, nor for those who i recommended 360 to.

I used earlier AVG Free as AV, but I and some friends of mine did experience it being slower as with the new version(s) came.

    Both are good.

I would go with NIS 2010 (with patch 17.5.0.127). I do not notice much slowdown. Norton 2010 is much improved (ram usage is only 5mb process on my system). As an alternative Microsoft Security Essentials is free and slightly faster in real time but MSE is far slower at full scans. Norton Internet Security 2010 has lots of additional features (and regular free product updates and patches within the subscription period, and has support for firefox).

Norton Internet Security 2010 if you can pick it up cheap.

Norton scans less files than MSE that's why it's faster. At least reports it scaned less.

Yes the scan time is less with Norton 2010 because of the cloud based reputation Norton Insight system. Yes not as many files need to be scanned.

I use NIS 2010 and couldn't be more satisfied. From the day it was first installed, I have yet to see a pop-up or notification.

It just works, and does everything on its own. Symantec really outdid themselves with 2010.

    I use Kaspersky.

Its been a long time since i used norton or mccafee on my machine to make any "current" comparison.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Problem solved :)

I moved to MSE from KIS 2010 as sadly KIS 2010 slows down startup - and on a SSD noticeably lags programmes.

    :p

thanks guys..i appreciate it! well...i have 4gb ddrIII 1067 mhz ram and the ati radeon hd 4670 graphics solution, and the c2d P8700, centrino 2 processor, 2.53ghz. ;)
I know RAM wont be a problem, but with the spec I have I want the max performance I can extract, and wouldn't like my system to be slowed down. I had overlooked MSE at the time of posting the question :p :p . I know its free and fast...but I would also like to have a specialised security system in my lappie. I have a really fast internet connection( 100 mbps...no ting :D :D :D ), and stay online almost 24x7 for my research stuff.
I think i will give the NIS 2010 a try, since so many people recommends it. How does the KIS 2010 fare comparatively?

I can even put a figure on it... possibly 5-10 seconds from the KIS firewall during actual booting.

About 15-20 seconds after log on.

That's on a SSD - do remember that fast startup isn't everything.

kis is way heavier than nis2010. it will cause some slowdowns. nortons doesnt always scan all files due to the fact it will skip known good files once it does a insight scan, this will also cause the first boot up with nis2010 to be somewhat slow till it registers all the files.

when using nis2010 after being installed run a insight scan FIRST then a full scan. now you will notice a large boot time speed increase. as nortons knows what it needs to scan and what it doesnt. some have complained about a slow boot time after install this is the reason... it wants to start to scan ALL files on the next reboot till you let it learn based on insight.

also to note with the newest updates i am loving the new avast internet security. i have dare i say this removed nortons to install avast now. i like it that much... and they are working very fast on updating all the components to work as best as possible. the firewall is really actually pretty decent especially in learning mode though it is much more chatty than nis2010 with nortons you basicaly dont even know its running except for the randon norton performing backround tasks and when it catches things. avast will pop up much more often.

kis2010 get ready for a bumpy ride if you have never used hips before. kis uses hips and is VERY VERY chatty and you will have to answer a ton of pop up's unlessusing auto mode which i dont recc. and even in auto mode kis will throw a ton of prompts at you wanting answers.

thanks a ton guys! I will probably go for NIS 2010! I understand fast boot up isn't everything...but hey why not have it when you can? But I think I will give MSE a try first ;) ;) .
