    new laptop with windows 7

currently using MSE .. and i have to say i am very pleased with how small of a footprint and the lack of resource hog it seems to be ... and seems like everyone loves it

but here is my question .. i dont like having my windows updates auto installed.. so i have my WINDOWS UPDate AS " check for updates but allow me to decide "

after 2 days .. i have noticed MSE never updates .. i always have to manual update .....

i dont want to have to manual update every day ...

i understand MSE runs through WINDOWS UPDATE .. so does this mean that if i want MSE to auto updatez i have to have the main WINDOWS UPDATE install auto as well ..... ?????????????

thinking about going to AVAST or AVIRA if they will atleast auto update without forcing me to auto update my entire computer

    anyone ????????????

Give it a bit more time. MSE will eventually update itself, but it won't do it "everyday".

    cheers ...

isnt daily updates what you want from a AV program

    new laptop with WINDOWS 7

i have been reading posts for 3 days about opinions and questions and answers ....

I have been trying MSE --- and the real reason i leaned towards it was because of the small footprint and the very small amount of resources ... both of which are right at the top of my WANT list from a AV program

but AUTO updates are at the top of the list as well .....

I dont want to have to manual update every day .. and apparently MSE doesnt update unless you have WINDOWS UPDATES on AUTO INSTALL ( SOMETHING I HAVE NEVER REALLY LIKED TO HAVE SET TO )

this alone makes me think about switching programs ...

    AVIRA ?
    AVG ?

i have read alot of posts about AVIRA annoying people with pop up ads over and over . and that doesnt interest me much either ...

what would a small resource program , yet update itself automatically be ????

    some advice please ....

    thanx

The annoying pop-up ad can be disabled in Avira. LINK.

Follow the steps mentioned under Vista.

    Cheers.

Have you seen this? I remeber seeing this a while ago.

Its an MSE Auto-Upate utility program, without having MS Update on. Haven't tested it myself, so i cant vouch for it myself.

If you're not happy with the way MSE auto-updates itself, why not create an update job yourself?

Use task scheduler, on the right panel click "Create Basic Task".
    Enter a description (f.i. Daily update); select daily; 1 day; run a program;
in Program/Script enter: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\MpCmdRun.exe"; in "Add arguments" enter: "-SignatureUpdate".

Webpage with pictures, explaining this ordeal ;) link.
    Cheers.

Supposedly you can create a scheduled task that runs "MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate" daily at logon or a given time (haven't tried this myself).

No AVG please. Please spread the message to friends too. No AVG.

    Avira Antivir Personal 9
    Microsoft Security Essential
    Avast! Home Edition

These are the best FREE AV which most people(not fully laymen) and professionals will recommend.
