    How did you turn off the automatic update option? From Avast settings or within Windows Services?

    You mean your Avast! autoupdate function can't be disable using normal way?
    So, you fix it using registry editing?
    And now you want to update it and it can't be update?
    Or you mean it still the same can't be disable?

    Your Avast! is free edition or?
    If free edition, I would suggest you to use AVIRA ANTIVIR PERSONAL 9...
    It is free and superior than Avast! free edition.

    Firefox' virusScan is not to be trusted.
    Disable it by following these steps;
    Open a new tab in Firefox.
    Type about:config, then answer yes to the question.
    In the Filter bar, type scan and then double-click on download.function.virusScan to change the value to false.

    Afaik f.i. Avast is not supported by this function and in such cases Firefox virusScan will fall back to Windows Defender (can't test it with Avira right now).
    My guess is that Avira didn't fail you but Windows Defender did.
    Note that the Firefox virusScan message Scanning for viruses will even be shown with no AV installed.
    It's a known Firefox bug; link
    Cheers.

    LIGHTGAM3R.....Okay I just set it to manual in Avast (using a 64 bit vista machine) and restarted it and it stayed in the manual mode for me. So what I would suggest is to unistall and reinstall Avast and see if that works for you. :)
