is there an av and/or a-malware scanner that uses multiple threads, allowing me to scan say two hdds, usb, etc at the same time?

Difficult to find/google, but according to Best 2010 Free Anti Virus Software Avast should have it.

Norton AV lets you set the number of CPU threads in use but not necessarily use the for individual drives.

NOD32 uses only one core for one scan but according to information from ESET will use another instance on a different core so if you set if four different scans on four different drives NOD will launch four separate instances each running on a different core.
While it may seem like a pain all you need to do is schedule scans for each physical drive.

Yes- three separate scans. Technically it will be one instance of the program but three separate windows and three separate scans will be started.
