arjunned is correct..it's whatever works for you..in a AV program.

I prefer Avira AV 9... :) Works great on my lappy and netbook! ;)

I wouldn't do paid AV..when I can get what I want in a good AV program for free.

    It's all in a individuals preference! ;)

Yep! Avira Antivir Personal 9 works like a charm.
    I love it.
If you think it is not safe enough, SpywareBlaster(passive protection), MBAM(scanner) and superantispywares(scanner) are your friend as well. Nevertheless, the comodo firewall or OnlineArmor Free.

All these softwares combine can produce a very strong protection. I guess it is on par with those paid version.

    resource hog

NOD32 user here for 4 years, never had a virus. super fast performance!

I hear Kaspersky is one of the best, but I went NOD32 as it is lighter in system resources.

you can't go wrong with either NOD32 or Kaspersky, nothing else, forget Norton, forget McAfee.

If you wanna go with a good free solution, then Avira AntiVir is teh best amongst the free antivirus list by a big margin

Avast! is not a resource hog at all, considering that most computers have 2 or more GB's of RAM nowadays.

Actually for free its - Avira (Low Real-Time Heuristics), Comodo Firewall with D+.

D+ is definitely the best free HIPS application out there and very important for todays security. I rely only on D+ to keep my comp from getting infected by malicious software. I think signature based AV's are getting old and HIPS is way to go. But i do have Avira as my second line of defense, just in case anything slips through. :)

With these 2, you have a great free security suite! :)
