none of the security related programs on my computer seem to be able to update automatically, it simply can't find the updates

those are avg free, windows defender and windows update that i am talking about

anyone know of any virus/trojan etc. that could block these programs from working properly?

    can they update manually?

A misconfigured DNS server by your ISP could prevent all from updating

actually yes, some trojans are known to change the DNS settings mentioned by gerryf19. righclick your connection name, choose properties, select tcp/ip protocol, hit on the properties button, and look at DNS servers addresses. if you aren't sure about the settings, ask your provider for details. in case that it is 85.xxx.xxx.xxx, most probably it's a result of an infection - in such case, delete these addresses and put in correct values (or simply switch to automatic DNS, in case that your ISP allows that).

(sorry if the buttons labels are not exact, i don't have english windows here.)

Its Malware that changes the DNS to 85.xxx.xxx.xxx Series of DNS server mate , so i would suggest you to run a MalwareBytes / SpyBot or whatever you seem to fit ;) this should clean it also disable the System Restore option too..

    FYI > Virus Name : Zlob.DNS
