Many users swear by it. Check out the threads about what's best, what's not.

    cheers ...

    This topic is too boring.
No AV is perfect. But Avira Antivir Personal 9 is the BEST FREE AV(currently). This is a fact that can't be denied.

I use it, with Real-Time Protection turned off. I just run a system scan occasionally and use it to scan any shady downloads.

only gripe i have with avira is that there is no x64 native client yet

but yes, it is the best free antivirus out in my humble opinion. i even paid for the premium :)

Everyone basically PAID version AV/IS will pawn FREE version AV/IS.
    THIS IS A COMMON KNOWLEDGE.
Moreover, Avira FREE got update everyday too maybe it already can kill the virus you mentioned sooner or later or even now.
I know Kaspersky is awesome but don't say Avira is not good. Out of those FREE AVs, it is the BEST already.

I don't feel it's up-to-par with Norton Internet Security 2009, but it does the job on my netbook quite nicely.
