I personally like Antivir because it takes up little resources, powerful, and basically does what it needs to do without slowing down my system.

I beg to differ. Antivir takes no time at all to update compared to Avast. Avast seems slow and clunky to me, while Antivir does what it needs to do silently and quickly.

Exactly the same, and also it's consistently highly rated in tests, and it's even available for Linux.

Although it may be kind of OT, one could say that Linux doesn't need anti-virus.

well, after a 3 month online survey, it was rated Software of the Year for 2007 by:

AVG Free is the most popular free solution available at no cost to home users and provides the high level of detection capability.

    * Easy to use, low system resources
    * Automatic update functionality
    * Real-time protection as files are opened and programs are run
    * AVG’s Virus Vault for the safe handling of infected files

And it might have something to do with the fact that it's in use by 60 million users worldwide in a multitude of languages.....

and i always like a good discussion.............

For the most part no, Linux doesn't really need it, but if you share files with a Windows machine, it's good to have it for that. It will help keep the Linux user from accidentally cross infecting the Windows machine with a Windows virus.

I find that AVG isn't as powerful as Antivir, which results in it not finding anything. But for the sake of testing, i'll download it once again. I'll also see if i can get a virus to test too.
Yeah but i didn't think you used windows so i thought you wouldn't need it.

calvin, I'm glad you're going to get a virus to test it :) does that mean just 1,2, 10, 20 ??

what type of statistical comparison are you going to run?

I've used AVG as well. It was very light on resources, but I'm not sure how effective it is. Last time I checked it didn't receive very good marks by testing sites.

I switced from Avast to Antivir..and i like Antivir a lot better..it doesn't take as long to update..and pretty much the same reasons that everyone else gave u..its a lot easier to use to in my opinion too.

so that gives Antivir another vote.

To tell you the truth, it's a lot harder to find a virus than i thought. Also, i'm looking for ones that are made for testing, not the ones that go erasing your hard drive.

I did some checking on Virus Bulletin.

AVG passed for Vista but failed for XP.

As a trend, AVG is improving as time goes on. Too bad they failed when tested on XP.

Not really, whether you have it on high or medium makes a little difference though.

I use Norton Internet Security 2008.

It integrates well, and is a VAST improvement over NIS '07, and '06.

I too like Avira Antivir for the reasons stated thus far.

Just because more people use AVG doesn't mean it's better. Many more people use IE than Firefox and we all know Firefox (or Opera or Safari) is better than IE. :)

Here are my test results. It used more resources than Antivir, so there goes the "low resources" claim people make, most of this came from vital services, along with program RAM usage when scanning. Also, i couldn't set the virus detection level. I like it on high where it can find anything, but i can be present to check for false positives. Also, the virus scans were slower than Antivir. Taking 10-30 mins more. Personally i like the (AVG)GUI better but who cares?
