    Hey all.

I am getting a new vitsa equipped laptop and need the virus software. I was thinking about getting avast or avg free addition because I have used them on my xp desktop with great success. Does anyone else think this is a good idea, or should i shell out the 60 bucks for nod32 or kapersky>

I've had no major problems with AVG currently, aside from Vista interfering with the automatic scheduled scan feature (but I run them manually anyway).

I've been running the avast! free without any problems, but, then again, the last time any virus made it onto my machines was several years ago and it was detected and neutralized. Spyware and hijacking seem to be more prevalent these days.

Unless you surf really suspect sites and press your luck, either AVG or Avast should be fine. I installed AVG on a friend's eMachines desktop wVista, and she's had no problems at all.

OTOH, if you've got the $60 handy and it won't put you in a bind to buy an AV program, Kaspersky and Nod are outstanding programs.

I used to use Avast free edition but bought the pro... they deserve to be compensated after a couple of years of free use.

i use free AVG for my vista & XP machine without a problem till now... i think better to save your money buying those AV you listed.... cause personally... i don't trust karpersky anymore... cause last time i bought them... n it took me only 1 day before my computer was ruined by a virus... :) maybe only me who experienced that... but i will never use karpersky even if ppl give me for free.... :D

Well, no Anti-virus is perfect by any means. As AKAJohnDoe said, Hijacking and spyware seem more prevalent (and more publisized) these days anyway. You definitely have more to gain getting someone's credit card number than messing around with company XYZ's server farm. Your more likely to succeed too.

I'd be interested in a AV test between AVG's/avast's etc. free version vs. their paid program.

I used AVG free for over six years, without a single problem. great anti virus program and free too. Recently, i dumped XP when it crashed for no really good reason, and decided to give Vista a try. So far i love Vista, and i decided since a friend had a copy of NOD32's latest laying around to install and run that. Again, i got it free, and i have no complaints, another really great program. so i will recommend either one of those two programs, as they work really great and are compatible.

I used AVG, but it proved slow, a resource hog, and intrusive. I now use Spyware Terminator. It is faster and does not simply start downloading updates without asking. I would be on line and AVG would simply start downloading a few times a day. Slowing down the unit and taking over the screen. It would not cancel. I have Adaware as back-up. Also the almost useless Windows defender.

Are you referring to AVG Antivirus or AVG AntiSpyware?

haha i wondered the same when I read that.

Ive had AVG antivirus since ive owned my own computers and have never had any serious virus problems, as long as you let the updates update and run periodical scans like you should anyway. I personally dont see the point in blowing 60-80 bucks on anti virus software if you can get something that works just fine for free. Corporate servers would be the exception.

Ive never used avast so i couldnt honestly comment on that.

Agreed. I've used AVG Antivirus for years and have never had a problem with it handling a virus. Sadly, I can't say the same of my Norton experience.

Granted, AVG has had it's share of teething problems adapting to Vista, but I'm sure it will soon be smooth sailing as it has been on XP (especially considering the numerous amount of service updates AVG gets).

Anti-virus, It worked fine but I found that Spyware terminator is an improvement, less bloated and intrusive. I used them side by side for about 6 months. It also has a clam anti-virus application. From Cnet; Editor's review of Spyware Terminator
This spyware scanner and removal tool simply does the job, but enabling some functions may cause slight slowdowns.

Spyware Terminator's crisp, clean interface uses simple buttons and tabs to operate and set options. The first measure of a spyware removal tool is the freshness of its spyware detection engine, and this application automatically downloads the latest spyware signatures. Novices will find Spyware Terminator easy to set and forget. Scans are easily scheduled; simply choose daily or weekly and a time. Real-time protection monitors key spyware types and Windows objects, though some testers report it causes slight system slowdowns.

Advanced users will appreciate Spyware Terminator's flexibility. Setting the sensitivity of various scans is as easy as moving a slider. Experienced users will want to enable an added function, Clam AntiVirus. The tool extends the power of real-time analysis by comparing program code against a database of known viruses, trojans, and worms.

Everyone from set-it-and-forget it users to those delving into virus code will find Spyware Terminator flexible, simple and effective, all key measures of a good spyware scan tool.

I used AVG Free for 4 years and then finally moved onto AVG a/v Pro+firewall. Total mem use = 34mb. Logical, unobtrusive and quietly gets on with it. I would hesitate free or paid for AVG with no hesitation
