Which anti-virus software should I get for windows 7 64 bit? I've done a lot of research and it looks like there are too many that are having issues. I've googled and looked on other forums, and so far, I found that Avira, nod32 64 bit and kaspersky may be the best choices (kaspersky is power hungry so I wont use that one).

Some issues with those 3 though that I have found:

    Avira:

1- I don't mind but some people are complaining about how avira warns you about using administrative rights but it is true.
2- The Avira AntiVir ProActiv is not available for 64 bit atm which is a biggy (behavior scanner basically).
3- You will get an error message when scanning outgoing emails but can be fixed, instructions are on their website.

    Kaspersky

1- big issue for xp users, no safe mode o_O
    2- Power hungry, the usual
3- No significant issues on win 7, seem to work great.

    Nod32 64 bit

1- nothing noticeable in forums etc. I might go with nod32 64 bit if I can't find anything wrong with it.

2- I did find some issues about using hotmail and nod but not sure if that is resolved. never used hotmail anyway but some might so take note of it.

3- DO NOT USE NOD32 V4!!!! USE THE BETA INSTEAD!! Major issues when using windows 7 64 bit.

Why wouldn't you use Microsoft Security Essentials? Works well for me

I've heard that it works well on windows 7 64 bit so I'll add that as well but it probably isn't secure enough for my networking. I rather go with a suite or something.

If you want to pay Norton Internet Security 2010 is the best.

I use MSE and run firefox with the noscript plugin. I dont have to worry about stuff installing from websites. The best setup I have used.

You know, I got my answer.

Normally I would never go with norton because of all the false rumors I've heard, (I only heard its slightly better then mcafee), but I learned today that Comcast is offering Norton for free to their customers. Not sure when they started this but that is just awesome.

afterwords, I did some research and found out that noron is on par (if no better) with kaspersky so I'll be getting norton.

Got my info here as far as "the best."

I have used Norton many times and it has disappointed me every time. Not only was it a resource hog but it gave many false positives and sometimes missed viruses.

Not true with Norton 2010 and later versions.

Exactly. I used Norton Internet Security 2009/2010 for over a year, and I've had no problems with it. It's pretty much completely transparent - you won't notice any impact it has on system performance at all (unlike Kaspersky 2010, which in my usage turned out to be quite a resource hog).

I only stopped using NIS10 when my license expired (using MSE right now, also with no problems).

avast! Free Antivirus works great in Windows 7 64 bit. You should try it. I like it better than Avira.

It is secure "enough" for our office - 29 systems mixing 32 and 64-bit, saving a bunch of $$$ in the making

    cheers ...

Getting a paid antivirus is unnecessary for the most part these days.
Free solutions are more than effective/adequate for people.

But, it comes down to personal preference. If you feel you are more secure with an actual suite for which you have to pay for, then it's your decision.

I've used avira on both 32bit and 64bit for months, and its just fine. The administrator thing just pops up once, and theres a check box to hide it forever, no problem.

MSE should be enough to cover those needs as well because it's just as good as Norton 2010 in terms of protection but still free.
Plus Microsoft has a paying version of it if I'm not mistaken which is more of a 'suite' version, so you can try with that.

Alternatively, Avast 5 free might be suitable to your needs as well.

on this forum you'll hear the same old same old....TrustPort is the best one I've found in a few years of hopping from one to the other...you have to pay for it, but it's not overly expensive.

I use MSE, and Avast, along with Private firewall. I uninstalled the Norton installed version some compatibility issues with other security aps and terrible support. I only have had one trojan problem in 6 months. Related to a download site.
